I have a brother who is bi-polar and has been off his meds for over six months. Talking to him on the phone is just like this Trump rant from yesterday's Fox and Friends show.
He gets on the phone with some introductory issue, and then he gets on a jag with many many digressions, until it takes him a half hour to get anything said. ( I usually put him on speaker and go about my business). You can't say anything back unless you forcefully interrupt his train of "thought". He has no control and gets more and more excited. The same with things he is trying to get done: constantly distracted by other things, spinning his wheels, using bad judgement.
He is very full of himself, is absolutely certain that he is right and everyone else wrong. Seems to be having a great time, but of course is engaging in self destructive behavior like spending too much money and hanging out with questionable people.
He was on lithium for over 25 years and did fine. But somehow started taking too much because of changing age or weight or something. He's in his early 60s. At the hospital they told him to adjust his dose to half. But he has decided that lithium almost killed him and wants/needs no more meds. Well being off his meds is more likely to do him harm, with his lack of impulse control and confused thinking. And nobody can tell him anything. We are planning an intervention by something called Adult Protective Services.
Wonder if they also do house calls at the White House?

(3,608 posts)have..this muthafucka was on something yesterday morning at that is that. I have not really believed that before...until yesterday morning...this was outside his usual ranting and raving.
It was more frenetic.
Granted...fear could also play a role here but I firmly believe he was on something.

Look out!

That is a first no? If so, why isn't that more newsworthy?

(37,428 posts)Trump's extemporaneous speech has always read to me like deflection. He spits random words at people to make uncomfortable questions go away; what's more, everything he says that isn't scripted comes across as bluffing, a word salad intended to sound confident and knowledgeable but is anything but. His bluffs are almost never called, so there is no reason to expect this behavior to change.

(17,276 posts)He may have only started being bi-polar later.
I can imagine him not sleeping very well, and running through all of his "best hits" rants, then get all wound up and spit them out on Fox and Friends.
My bi-polar brother, by the way, has irregular sleeping and eating patterns now that he's not on meds. He is losing a lot of weight, that he couldn't afford to lose--is about 140 lbs at 5'10". I think he forgets to eat, and is up all hours of the night.

(34,661 posts)Bi-Polarism is becoming a major missed issues with older persons. Another Freind who manages Home health care persons, has also said, this is a major Mental Health issue. She has been doing Training Sessions with her Care Givers in order to spot signs of Bi-Polarism that might be masked as Dementia. And getting the Patients Doctor involved..
