Two Trump court defeats -- DACA and Planned Parenthood
Federal judges in Washington, D.C. and Spokane, Wash., have delivered the latest in a series of court rulings thwarting the Trump administration from actions against so-called DREAMers, and its bid to deny grants to Planned Parenthood.
The administration has been a consistent loser at the U.S. District Court and federal appellate court. But . . .
Its latest district court defeats came as administration lawyers argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of the latest Trump travel ban directed at residents from strife-torn Muslim states of the Middle East and Africa.
U.S. District Judge John D. Bates rules late Tuesday that the administration must resume registering undocumented young people for the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivats (DACA) program that Trump terminated last fall.
Microsoft, party to the lawsuit challenging termination of DACA, applauded Judge Bates' ruling, Nearly 700,000 young people -- eight of 10 from Mexico -- were enrolled in the DACA program, begun under President Obama, when terminated by Trump.
"DREAMers grew up in the country, attended our schools, pay taxes and contribute to our communities," said Microsoft President Brad Smith. "We hope this decision will help provide new incentive for the legislative solution the country and these individuals so clearly deserve."
"As the business community has come to appreciate, a lasting solution for the country's DREAMers is both an economic imperative and a human necessity."
