Conservative leader: Next House chaplain should have a familySome Catholic Democrats erupted upon hearing Walkers comments. Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said some lawmakers had surmised that Ryans move was designed to appease anti-Catholic sentiments in the GOP conference. Walker, Connolly said, is now confirming our fears.
I have to wonder how much the current Pope's vocal concern for social issues, the poor, refugees, responsible stewardship of the environment, and other stuff the GOP would like out of sight and out of mind is affecting this.
There are certainly plenty of hardcore troglodyte American Catholics, in Holy Orders and in the congregations, who are also unhappy with the shift in emphasis. But my Catholic friends and family report that there is a very definite propagation of a more "Red-Letter Gospel" approach. And there are plenty of very liberal clergy in the various Orders who are invigorated and encouraged.
If this kind of stupidity pries apart the religious conservative coalition, it may actually be a positive development for Democrats. But it will put many in a tough position, because with all the will in the world to embrace the more liberal social agenda, the hardline anti-choice agenda will not be going away.

(28,151 posts)never considered the Catholics in their merry band of assholes to be one of them, just useful idiots. If these lunatics ever achieved the theocracy they think they want the Catholics would be rounded up with the atheists, gays, trans, and everyone else they hate.
Maybe they will get some kind of clue now? Probably not.

(20,759 posts)...how if a Catholic President was elected, the Pope would end up running the country.
Conservatives look poised on the edge of pulling that one back out of the archive now.

(11,261 posts)Just like republicans. Most nondenominational preachers in this country preach the Old Testament . You won't even see a crucifix in their churches and if your lucky Jesus may be mentioned maybe once during a service.

(114 posts)Constantine I made this mistake. He thought that he could use the new Christian religion to unify the fragmenting Roman Empire. Previously, Roman persecution had forced the various Christian sects to grit their teeth and band together in order to survive. As soon as the persecution ended, the rival Christian factions turned against each other, and arguably left the Empire more divided than ever.
