Seriously, we were all wrong
The hate and acrimony towards immigrants, of any kind, and people of color in general, the handicap and LGBTQ, is becoming increasingly disturbing.
That the public discourse switched gears so quickly from one administration to the next is also disturbing.
It shows that the perceived growth of society, at least those perceptions of a white guy that lived in blue-ish states during Obama, were shallow roots that were pulled from the ground long before they had the chance to take hold, much less grow.
That evangelicals and fringe hate groups feel emboldened to push back so aggressively against what modest progress we have made is disturbing.
That evangelicals are more than willing to ignore trumps obvious shortcomings and frame them in the best light should cause us to focus on why?. Their overt and unambiguous objective is to enact a religious government that is point for point no different than any other religious extremist government found anywhere else in the world. A totalitarian regime with draconian laws that demand universal and unquestionable adherence to their religious doctrine.
Racism, xenophobia and evangelicals are a reality that are not going away. We cant bury our problems in feel good speeches and platitudes anymore.
The US is either a nation of reason, understanding and inclusion or its not.
Lets not pretend anymore that we ever were anything special, much less a shining beacon on a hill.
Our brothers and sisters are hurting and we, as a nation, are doing little more than patting them on the back while adding the obligatory there, there.
