It seems Republicons have always been corrupt and their base

doesn't care one whit.

While “Teapot Dome” entered the American political vocabulary as a synonym for governmental corruption, the scandal had little long-term effect on the Republican Party. Calvin Coolidge, a Republican, was elected president in 1924.

Now this was before women could vote, so perhaps we won't have a repeat of '24.

The original party was dominated by abolitionists. After the Civil War there was a struggle over control of the party between the reformist/abolitionist wing and the eastern industrialist and Wall Street elites. The latter faction came out on top, ended reconstruction, and set about corrupting government to serve their interests. It should be noted that the Republican Party continued to have a strong progressive faction, and that this faction briefly seized power again under the charasmatic leadership of Teddy Roosevelt. TR was dethroned, the elites recaptured the party, and the corruption resumed.
