Facing a crackdown on their favorite visa to enter the United States, hundreds of wealthy Indians are turning to another program that fast tracks immigrants to a green card. Applications from India for EB-5 visas -- which give immigrants a green card if they invest $500,000 and create 10 jobs in the United States -- have surged in recent months.
The US government issued 174 such visas to Indians in the year ended September 2017, an increase of about 17% over the previous year, according to State Department data. Interest has taken off since then. In October and November, the United States received another 307 applications from India for what is often referred to as the "golden visa."
Indian demand for EB-5 visas has "really become explosive in the past 12 months," Neil Weinrib, an immigration lawyer based in New York, told CNNMoney. The spike comes as the US government makes it harder to get H-1B visas, which allow skilled foreign workers to be employed in the United States. More than 70% of H-1B visas have been awarded to Indians in recent years.
Changes to the program -- like greater scrutiny of applications and a possible shortening of the three-year visa period -- threaten big Indian outsourcing firms such as Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys (INFY) and Wipro (WIT), which hire and send thousand of tech workers to companies in Silicon Valley. Those companies are now dialing back H-1B applications and hiring more Americans.
Hiring more Americans! DUers should apply for jobs at the above companies immediately. Don't wait too long or Trump may change his mind.

(7,814 posts)Some of them are the most incompetent seatwarmers I've ever seen. I'll never forget one man who had been in the US for years who couldn't even understand "what is the date today?" His answer (twice) was "yes."
IronLionZion
(45,615 posts)and should have no problem being more competent and telling you the correct date.
Most computers and cell phones can tell you the correct date.

(5,559 posts)Those I have worked with were mediocre talents, usually operating at a disadvantage due to English being a second language. Their positions could easily have been filled by American workers.
I felt bad for them as they were being ruthlessly exploited by my former employer. They were all salaried and given workloads that required 60-80 hour weeks to meet. Due to their work visa, they were essentially trapped and could not easily find work elsewhere. I left as they were starting to overload the rest of us and give negative performance reviews if we didn't work insane hours.
The availability of captive workers who could be abused with impunity suppresses wage growth and disincentivizes employers investing in employee development.

They need workers and they hire Americans.

(45,615 posts)It has a long list of companies hiring H-1bs and the high median salaries. People are getting paid well. And there are lots of jobs available.

(25,485 posts)most incompetent folks I'd ever come across..they did nothing but whine and complain
In contrast H-1B holders were very hardworking

(45,615 posts)and I want Americans to have jobs. I'm just sharing an opportunity for out of work DUers to apply for jobs.
These companies are in the red states. I worked in Florida, Indiana, Minnesota, Western NY, Western PA, and get contacted by recruiters in Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Wisconsin, and others rural areas that don't have a lot of opportunities for tech jobs.
There are jobs out there for DUers who want to apply for it.

(56,829 posts)They invest the money, and then often also buy a house in the US so they can send their children to American schools and then have a better chance to get into an Ivy League school than if coming straight from China. They also send their kids to expensive boarding schools (Choate, Hotchkiss, Loomis Chaffee, etc in my state of Connecticut, Philips Exeter in NH, etc)
IronLionZion
(45,615 posts)they buy up a lot of real estate. And as much as we hear about how bad American schools are, plenty of smart people still want to come here for college or grad school. They still view America as the land of opportunity and freedom and available work in many interesting new fields.
NewJeffCT
(56,829 posts)but I did hear that foreign applications to US colleges were down 2-3% last year and were expected to drop even more this year.
I think the top colleges - Ivy League, MIT, Stanford, Northwestern, etc will still get a lot of foreign applications, but less prestigious colleges and/or less well known colleges may suffer quite a bit.

(45,615 posts)because Trump is such a dipshit. Some students find it's not worth the cost to pay tuition for the first semester and arrange for housing and flights and other expenses and risk rejection for a student visa. Having admittance to a good school in America and having Trump's people reject them for the visa really sucks.
The visa situation constantly changes as the administration puts out new rules and the courts strike them down or not.
