Tennessee was an extremely unique state during the Civil War. The state has traditionally been divided into "three grand divisions" East, Middle, and West. During the lead up to the Civil War, the East was staunchly Union, the West was staunchly Confederate and Middle Tn was essentially divided. If you know the topography of the state, you can understand easily why the Western portion of the state would be adamantly pro-slavery and the Eastern portion of the state would be more abolitionist, with the Middle equally divided.

If you travel into many small communities in East Tn today, many have Union cemeteries from the war. Sadly, that portion of the state decided to hate Dems in the 30's with the advent of the TVA and have largely remained GOP strongholds thanks to the evangelical movement in the south.

I applaud Rep Towns for this long overdue bill.

whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, are forever prohibited in this state.

Now let's not get way too rushed about ridding ourselves completely of this slavery thing!
