Yeah this is petty, I know. But bullshit is bullshit and it should be

called out.

"Is Melania Trump really fluent in five languages?"

It goes to show how lazy and gullible the press is in this country. Particularly when it comes to right wing lies.

At the very least she could get a tutor:

she barely speaks "tourist" French and Italian. She has been in this country for 20 years and her English is pretty poor for someone who has been here that long and who has had the means to properly learn the language and pronunciation.

That second video was LOL funny! Especially the last scene! Thanks for posting!

I speak nine languages, can pass for a native for a while in a few of them, but am not in the category of "no one would ever suspect in a million years," etc.

Slovenia is a tiny country surrounded by others. The few times I was there, almost everyone I ran into spoke some German, some Italian, some English and some Croatian.

As for Melania and articles, Slavic languages, of which Slovenian is one, do not have them, which is why so many native speakers of those languages have such a hard time learning to use them, and prefer to leave them out altogether.

Germany has land borders with 9 other countries. I'd have to be some kind of idiot if all I spoke was English and German, since I travel to other countries almost every day for my job.

video. I'd be the first one to tell you you're not fluent. Words have meaning. If someone comes up to me and tells me they're fluent in Spanish and as I start speaking to them find they have at best Spanish 101 skills. And don't demonstrate the ability to get beyond "How are you?" and "My name is...". That's a big stretch of the word. I could get by in rudimentary Italian if I were dropped in the middle of Rome. But I'd never claim fluency.

Now mind you. One video is not necessarily enough to prove one way or another. But I've looked and looked for examples of her fluency in other languages. Because I thought that at least was her one redeeming quality. But I can't find much.

But I'm in Brussels and Paris once a week for work. I go the whole day without speaking a word of English and don't even notice. I'm in Italy less, but work with Italian colleagues all the time in Germany, France and Switzerland. They eventally figure out I'm not Italian, but usually not right away.

I would think that after 20 years. She'd figure out it's "I'm going to the store." not "I go to store." or something like that. Now English being my second language I can sympathize with immigrants struggling with the language. Hell, it's even more difficult for those coming here when they're older. But if she were some great polyglot as right wingers like to pretend. I would think she'd have picked the language here much better than she has. Sure, being married to a cro-magnon who barely speaks at a 4th grade level doens't hurt. But it seems to me like this ability of hers is greatly exaggerated.Like everything else about this shit family.

PS I envy you. I'd love to be in Europe right now.

multiple languages, a roommate of mine had parents from Germany (one of whose parents was from Italy and South America (Brazil and Peru (and a native/Indian dialect))), his father grew up when the American GIs pulled into Germany (his father remembered the GI Joes giving him chocolate as a kid during WW2)...

So, you have Italian, English, German, Spanish, Indian Dialect (Peru), Portu., French (from the German/Italian border region). This alone constitutes seven languages, that he grew up w/. Amazing.

Europe and all of it's countries are so broken up and relatively small compared to the US, so European families were more exposed to different languages all of the time.

I've been profoundly hard of hearing so unable to really grasp and pick up additional languages (other than English of course, which I mangle sometimes due to hearing loss). I've always admired multi-language speakers for language is usually reflective of one's environment and you'll always have sayings that are so unique to that country/language. Take care.

So Europeans are more likely to speak more languages than Americans are, if only because their countries are smaller, and, let's face it, how different is Italian from Spanish anyway? But in addition to her real difficulty with English--and it's not just a matter of not using articles--the Pope spoke to her in Italian, touted as one of the languages she knew really well because she worked as a model in Italy, and she clearly didn't understand a word he was saying! The translator had to step in and explain to her that the Pope was making a little joke about how fat her husband is.

Lying about her linguistic abilities is of a piece of the big lie that she isn't just a pretty (plastic) face; she's a Klassy Ladi, more than fit to be the First Lady, not just a piece of ass.

Which is of a piece with the entire Trump lie about how smart he is, what a great negotiator he is, blah blah blah ad infinitum.

When they go low, we go lower. That's the only language Trumphumpers understand. And speaking of languages, can you imagine if the wife of a Democratic president was an immigrant, spoke stilted English, stole excerpts of her speech from a former FLOTUS, and was an ex-porn star, lingerie model, or whatever the hell she is/was? The right-wingers would have been exploding, imploding, and foaming at the mouth all at once.

Since the Magats like to deport people so much, they should start with Melania. After all, she is an immigrant, not welcome in Trump's fucked-up Amerika.
