When I think of Barbara Bush, I remember this video. Saner times. Although I didn't vote for her husband, I do respect the man. And I respect her.
Watch these two MELT over the puppies:

(2,857 posts)We had a republican POTUS bragging about his dogs puppies and it was worth a news conference. WTF happened to stick us with the orange loon?

(24,128 posts)Nobody could have foreseen where we are now. I mean the Republican party, at the time, was still catering to social conservatives (and I hated that), but it was nothing like what the country faces now.

She was comfortable in her own skin and embraced her aging without fear. She proudly wore her gray hair and did not rely on cosmetic enhancements beyond some light makeup. She understood that there is a regal beauty in aging and she did not need to go through gyrations to look younger to please and conform to others pronouncements of what is beautiful. That takes a certain amount of guts and self esteem for someone in the public eye. I respected her for that.

(4,413 posts)I can think of at least one prominent Republican man in his 70s who really needs to let go of the "tanned, youthful, windswept look".

That seems so long ago - another era.
I love that President Bush doesn't seem the least bit concerned that the little puppy might pee on him ...

(11,673 posts)While the Bush's weren't perfect by any means, they were people who were capable of love and empathy. Their obvious love and pride in these puppies was genuine. Some things just can't be faked.

(10,237 posts)...I have a very fond memory of Barbara Bush.
During the Bush to Clinton transition after the 1992 election, when Hillary came to the White House to meet with Mrs. Bush for the first time, as they met on the walkway in, the two of them shared a very warm hug, and it was Mrs. Bush who initiated it.
I really miss that type of civility in politics.
PEACE!

The moment you pick up a puppy, the mother goes with you. My cat was worried in the same way with her kittens. Credit to Barbara Bush to recognize the worries of the mother and handing the puppy back to her so that she sees that everything is ok.
