Blindly following anything, anyone, is one of the most dangerous things a human being can do.

This is exactly what Trump voters have done and I remind the Trump voters I know of this fact. I cannot ignore Trump voters. They are too self destructive and too much of a threat to all of us.

One day many of them will realize they made a big mistake. It is so Un-American to blindly follow.

trump humpers are a cult, blindly following him. Hard to understand how so many can be so blind to reality.

Left or right, that type identify with a political group, accept the leader(s) that come with it as their own, and then adapt their beliefs to whatever the current leadership tells them to believe and support.

We've known follower types tend to do that for a long time now, and there are a lot of them, especially on the right but also on the left. But for me learning just how strong and pervasive that last is was a real shocker. Also a powerful explanation of what's happened.

Trumpsters are the evolution of the dissident right group that had risen as tea partiers in reaction to what the business-oriented GOP leadership was doing to them. They elected Trump as rebellion, and now the GOP has mostly become Trump's party because its voters support HIM --- no matter what he does.

The billionaire-backed congressional leadership is now more like a strong deposed faction trying to regain control without taking Trump on directly, because hurting him would only increase the resistance against them.

Notably, they worked for decades to successfully unhitch Republican voters from traditional conservative notions and redirect them to serve the new billionaire classes. That ultimately has broken down in rebellion, but they know full well that the trumpsters they created will support almost anything the leader they do accept does.

The conservative psychology leads them to blindly follow.

Remember the old quote “I’m not a member of an organized party, I’m a Democrat?”
Liberals tend to challenge what they hear, and use their brains to form their own opinions. That makes it hard to organize progressives- you end up with a big tent of many coalitions. Meanwhile conservatives like to be told what to do. This is well established in psychology and political science.
John Dean has written good books on conservative authoritarian psychology.
Also Bob Althschuler.

And George Lakoff, “Don’t think of an Elephant” covers this.

(Of course, nothing with humans is absolute - there’s always some authoritarian types in every party. But Republicans are far far far far worse than Democrats.)

many people take up fundamentalism or evangelism. One of my best friends did about 25 years ago, partly to have a social life but also I am convinced to relieve her of the need to think for herself.
