I have returns that were filed last night which still have not been Confirmed.
I've been submitting Extensions & Returns since 8 AM PST this morning, and none of them have been processed yet. My tax software provider is holding everybody's returns on their system, since they're unable to send anything to IRS or States.

They are working this as a "priority." That message has been up for about 6 hours now.

(3,194 posts)My software provider says that their timestamp is what matters. But they can't send to IRS until the IRS system is accepting again.
And yeah, the entire Payment system is down as well.

(51,651 posts)I just finished them since I had been sick and didn't want to screw them up too much. This makes me feel better in a strange way...my method is not modern but it got the job done in time. The fucking moron can hire an accountant so why did HE need an extension?

(34,139 posts)My accountant had to generate amended returns for 2015 & 2016 and re-do the 2017 return. So we just took care of everything last week even though I had to send in a check for 2017 (I will be getting refunds for 2015 & 2016).
I've had years where I had to get extensions mostly because paperwork from other entities were not ready soon enough. It really sucks to have to do that.

UPDATE: Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin says Americans who have been unable to pay their taxes Tuesday because the IRS payment website is down will receive an extension when the site is working again.
The website has been down most of the day and wasnt operational as of 4:30 p.m. EDT.
Mnuchin commented on the outage when asked by reporters after an event in Derry, N.H., where he promoted the Drumpf tax overhaul along with Ivanka Drumpf.

(23,379 posts)It's their fault, they could easily add a day to the deadline.
Or were you planning on kicking back with a good bourbon and a cuban cigar? You earned it.

(3,194 posts)Even though it's not being processed, they are saying you need to submit by today.
It's a fucking nightmare for me, because I can't close anything out, and confirm that my clients' returns are 100% accepted.

yeh didn't think so

(34,139 posts)Didn't the IRS upgrade their equipment under Obama? If so computers don't tend to last more than 5-8 years under heavy use so I bet this is the same stuff that was bought around 2010.
"It is important to point out that the IRS is the world's largest financial accounting institution, and that is a tremendously risky operation to run with outdated equipment and applications," then-commissioner John Koskinen told Congress in 2015. "Our situation is analogous to driving a Model T automobile that has satellite radio and the latest GPS system. Even with all the bells and whistles, it is still a Model T."

Aside from the hardware, they are using antiquated software:
The tax agency's embrace of IBM in the 1950s helped drive down audit rates. It's still depending on the same code.

Though the IRS has periodically upgraded its computing system, todays system is still running the same code, which was written nearly 60 years ago. Most of it is in the Assembly programming language, which the IRS itself has described as antiquated and inflexible. Worse, the number of programmers who can understand and maintain the code behind the Individual Master File (IMF) dwindles with every passing year. According to the Government Accountability Office, the IMF and its business counterpart (the BMF) are the oldest computing systems used by the federal government. (The runner-up in this dubious contest is the software used to coordinate the nations nuclear weapons.)
Plans to replace the IMF with a twenty-first-century equivalent known as CADE (Customer Account Data Engine) have faltered. The transition is now well behind schedule. As a consequence, the likelihood of a catastrophic computer failure during tax season increases with every passing year. That may not pose quite the same danger as an errant missile, but the prospect of lost refund checks, unnecessary audits, and other errors suggests that the time has come to bring the IRS into the 21st century.
