Last night, Stewart on The Daily Show totally missed the mark when it came to his chick-fil-et segment. Is he that thick? Is it his het-majority privilege showing through.
If I had a direct line to him, I'd ask him what his reaction would be if the CEO of a major fast food chain came out against interracial marriage? People against racially mixed marriages used to trot out their bibles to make their case. How is this different.
What if Stewart were around in the 60's. Would he have done the same lame segment to say we shouldn't boycott Woolworth's because, after all, they did nice things as well as being discriminatory.
Stewart is taking this centrist, can't we all get along thing a little too far.
Calling for civility isn't a problem. We could all use a little civility, but having the courage to stand for ones convictions sometimes takes a little incivility.

(2 posts)Sorry, disagree. The Chik-Fil-A folks are no doubt assholes, but being run by assholes has never been cause for a civic ban before, nor should it be. Look at that fascist sympathizer Henry Ford--because he admired Hitler, no one should have been allowed to buy his cars? That's where this "banned in Boston" logic leads us. If it's stupid to ban soda in NYC for health reasons, then it's stupid to ban anything for political reasons. All it does is get the right up in arms about the loss of their freedoms.

(2 posts)A couple of other questions. Would you ban a Mark Twain book because you thought the author was racist? Because it's happened. How about calling for the life of Salman Rushdie over The Satanic Verses? Does that make sense? According to your logic, it does.

(18,184 posts)They're different things.
Every consumer has a right to boycott products that they don't agree with for whatever reason.
Exactly. And since money = speech these days, I choose to speak through not spending my money at a company that will then turn around and give my money to anti-gay hate groups.

(3,231 posts)Who said anything about banning.
Having been reduced to a consumer by our culture, the only power I have is my money.
I can spend my money (an encourage others to spend theirs) any way I please or don't please.
My money will not go into the pockets of a company whose money then goes to direct action against me and my community.
Simple.

(3,231 posts)And why should my money go to a company who will then give my money to hate groups hell bent on destroying me and mine.

I feel honored that my opinion made you feel so strongly that you went and opened a DU account.
Welcome!
I disagree with you 100%
Perhaps a little less venom when answering people's countering opinions to yours will make people want to engage with you.
As it stands, I have no further wish to speak with you.

(23,590 posts)But, I don't think it should come from the government.
I am Jewish so is my mayor and someone pointed out in a bit of an offensive yet true way that the city of Chicago does not go after all of the restaurants owned by religious Jews who have antiGLBT beliefs. But, the mayor spoke out against chick fil a and an alderman is not letting a new chic fil a in his district.
If I ate meat, I wouldn't go to a chic fil a. I like the people boycotting it. I think having government restricting it is not right unless they discriminate in an illegal way like refusing to serve GLBT. If the issue is that the owner is anti GLBT in his statements, I think the government should allow his free speech and we should decide where we want to eat and educate others to our strong convictions.
Do those religious jews donate millions of dollars to direct action groups who work against a subset of society? If they do, may their god have mercy on them.

(27,461 posts)the part where he went to the woman eating the sandwich and the guy with the i-phone was beyond lame.
besides missing the mark, it was stupid, badly acted and painful to watch.
