In race to represent St. Louis in Congress, Clay and Carnahan trade jabs during radio debate (PD)
"ST. LOUIS After months of bitterness, accusations of treachery and warnings about party disunity, Democratic congressmen Russ Carnahan and William Lacy Clay finally had their kumbaya moment today.
It lasted about 60 seconds.
Carnahan and Clay, who both represent parts of St. Louis in the U.S. House, were thrown together into a primary fight by a Republican-drawn map that will likely put one of them into one congressional seat that covers the whole city, and put the other one out of a job. They will face off Aug. 7, with the primary winner being slated on the Nov. 6 general election ballot for the heavily Democratic district.
In an hour-long interview on KMOX radio this morning, both men traded jabs over who allegedly conspired with Republicans on the new map (Clay), who allegedly hurt the party by filing in this district instead of neighboring one (Carnahan), and other familiar allegations.
About 38 minutes in, though, Carnahan, seated next to Clay in the radio studio, turned to him and said: What about you and I, after the elections done, we shake hands, congratulate the winner, and we say . . . were going to get on with supporting Democrats. Can we shake on that today?
