a "subject" or "suspect" they killed, it was a human being.

And we need to end the ability of cops to turn off their cameras.

Bessner waived his preliminary examination Thursday in the case. He posted a $1 million bond a few days ago, said his defense attorney Richard Convertino, and is out on bond until he goes to trial on the charges.

Bessner is charged with second-degree murder and two counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the Aug. 26 death of Damon.

The preliminary examination was adjourned from Jan. 24 to Thursday to give Bessner’s defense attorney, Richard Convertino, more time to go through discovery materials in the case.

State leaves trooper 'out to dry,' hiding details in teen's ATV death, attorney says

Updated Mar 22; Posted Mar 22

By Gus Burns fburns@mlive.com

Michigan is refusing to appoint an attorney for former state trooper Mark Bessner, who is accused of killing a Detroit teen and is facing a federal wrongful death lawsuit.

He's also charged criminally with second-degree murder and manslaughter.

The state, however, has provided attorneys from state Attorney Bill Schuette's office to represent Bessner's former partner, Trooper Ethan Berger, also a defendant named in the same civil lawsuit.

The state does typically provide counsel for troopers facing civil lawsuits stemming from actions taken while on duty, based on its contract with the state police labor union. That isn't the case with criminal cases.

Comments caught on police video get Detroit officer reassigned

JOHN WISELY, ELISHA ANDERSON, ANN ZANIEWSKI | DETROIT FREE PRESS
Updated 6:41 p.m. EDT Apr. 13, 2018

Detroit Police Chief James Craig reassigned a 22-year veteran officer, Aubrey Wade, for making insensitive comments that were caught on a fellow officer's body camera, minutes after a fatal ATV crash last summer.

Craig said he ordered the move Wednesday after the Free Press raised questions about Wade's conduct, which appears in camera footage the newspaper obtained under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act.

Detroit Police Officer Aubrey Wade was reassigned to non-patrol duty on Wednesday, April 11, 2018, after his supervisors reviewed video of him making insensitive remarks at the scene of a fatal ATV crash involving Damon Grimes.

"No sympathy at all for bullshit. Mother fucker wanna be grown, ya' act grown, ya' gotta fucking deal with it," Wade can be heard saying of 15-year-old Damon Grimes, who crashed his ATV after State Police shot him with a stun gun during an Aug. 26 chase. Grimes later died from his injuries.

“I felt, given what I heard and saw in the video, it was enough that I needed to de-appoint him from his position of neighborhood police officer," Craig told the Free Press on Wednesday.
