Former FBI head: assumption Clinton would win a factor in email probe

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former FBI Director James Comey said his assumption that Hillary Clinton would win the 2016 presidential election was a factor in opening an inquiry into her emails, according to part of an ABC interview broadcast on Saturday.
The controversy involved Clintons use of a private email server for official correspondence when she was secretary of state under then-President Barack Obama, including for messages that were later determined to contain classified information.
Although the FBI ultimately decided not to refer Clintons case for prosecution, Democrats said Comeys announcement damaged her with voters right before the election, and he faced complaints that his moves were politically motivated.
I dont remember consciously thinking about that, but it must have been because I was operating in a world where Hillary Clinton was going to beat Donald Trump, and so Im sure that it was a factor, Comey said in an excerpt of an interview aired on Saturday.

(22,633 posts)1. I think that millions on the Left assumed that Clinton was going to win
and so they felt that gave them permission to either vote 3rd party or not vote at all.
And now we know how that turned out.

(20,022 posts)2. He still doesn't get it.
One could argue that he would have been right to insert the FBI into a Presidential race on the eve of an election if and only if he had concrete evidence that one of the candidates had committed a serious crime that would have been a disqualifier for the office. But without solid proof he should have kept his mouth shut and conducted his investigation as warranted. "Maybe this" or "maybe that" is simply not enough to announce anything at a time like that and shows a reckless disregard for the democratic process.
