"And we are also hearing reports, many of the targets, in particular the air bases in some of the military installations that had been struck, had indeed been evacuated of personnel earlier in the week," @sethdoane reports from Damascus, Syria

(8,209 posts)Not only for immediate humanitarian reasons but also because it lessens the odds of escalation.

(13,081 posts)Thats kind of the problem. Many chemical weapons are very difficult to manufacture. But sarin and chlorine gas are simple.
Sarin is, despite what a few websites claim, a fairly straightforward process that doesnt require a lot of space. Chlorine gas can be made in an apartment with stuff you find at Home Depot.
The only way to actually stop Assad from using them, while killing as few people as possible, would be to destroy his air forces: his delivery method. But half his planes are being operated by Russians and Russian aircraft are interspersed, so an attack on them very likely starts a shooting war with the Russians. Plus, Assads forces have already won the civil war and are essentially just mopping up (I suspect the danger of the final house-to-house fighting was the motive for the use of chemical munitions and also suspect that Assad neither ordered nor knew about it).
Throw in Israel, Iran, Turkey, the Kurds. Theres no good way out of this. Praying for Putins death is Earths best chance at survival at this point.

(35,383 posts)One, avoiding the loss of life. It's a pity we didn't kill more people. Esp. civilians, who often also work at military bases. (Then, of course, we could complain that Trump killed X many people, but they probably weren't involved in anything esp. bad.)
Two, as soon as the threat of strikes was announced, were I Assad I've have cleared out every single military installation that I could. Move the soldiers and anything moveable into civilian areas to ensure that a strike against them would kill civilians. But also make sure that a strike would only hit empty infrastructure. Even the Russians took this step (with media reporting it as a threat instead of as threat avoidance).
Were I Trump, I'd have not aimed at a military installation as such, but at the ministry building(s) responsible for military decisions and planning. Repeated offenses are escalations. I don't think I'd aim for soldiers who were just sitting there.
