Some are probably legal - the robo call from the health insurance company or politician. But I'm getting calls trying to sell me this or that. What happened to the opt-out registry?

(23,500 posts)The number to this phone is not listed anywhere, and I have not given it out to anyone but family.
They must be carpetbombing whole exchanges with sales calls now.

(13,397 posts)If I don't pick up, they will try me for weeks on end, three times a day. I have never given money over the phone. I'm trying to get my records updated to point to a Google Voice number that goes nowhere, but it's taking a while.

(23,500 posts)About 60% of the phone calls we receive are telemarketing.
Another 30% (this year) are policial fundraising.
10% are from people we actually know. Maybe.

(7,675 posts)as one poster pointed out, doing business with a company is an exemption
from the national DNC list. And the company can sell that phone list unless
the warranty specifically protects personal information.
Even so marketing research companies and non profits are exempt so they
use random number software to generate their call lists. They don't need to
buy them. There's also the problem of political orgs selling their phone lists
after elections when they are not using them for political campaigns.
