It seemed like the only civilized species known to keep slaves is man.

The kids who experienced that have been politicized for life. They will be formidable adversaries, like generations of Irish and Palestinians.

Anaheim and a couple of other towns in Southern California. I owned the ugliest motorcycle on the road, a used and much abused Kawasaki 440. For riding between stopped cars to the front of the line where a train had stopped traffic -- a legal maneuver at the time -- a crew-cut and most authoritarian type guy tried to run me down when the gates went up. I did a wheelie...

Honda of some indeterminate 1970s vintage. First the tach broke then the speedo, but I never much looked down at those, anyway, as I weaved my way through traffic, rat-racing with Porsche 911s and having a fine old time.

My experiences were mostly positive, even with the crewcutted LA Country Sheriff who pulled me over when I blatantly jumped the green light at the Santa Monica entrance ramp to the I-10 Freeway one afternoon. Neither I nor the girl on the back were wearing helmets. I didn't even have a motorcycle license. He gave me a ticket for jumping the light, and let us go on our merry way. He said, 'Have a nice day" like he meant it, got on his Harley, and cruised off with a smile on his face.

In their natural element, with enough sunshine and blue skies, cops are generally decent human beings. I feel for how the job dehumanizes them.

... in PDs across this once free Nation, it signals dark times ahead. Cops should NOT be soldiers and they should NOT be armed like them. Many have become nothing more than publicly funded and sanctioned street gangs. This needs stopped and soon.
