ANY runner can do: lied about his race times! And by lied, I mean REALLY lied! The dude claimed to have run a sub- 3 marathon. Turns out he hasn't even gone sub-four hours. Pretty lame, Eddie Munster!

I ran my first Half Marathon last fall in Cambridge, MA. My daughter convinced me that it would be FUN! I was 64 at the time. Oldest runner in the race. It wasn't pretty, but I finished. MY run was just barely a sub-3.
C'mon Paulie, don't they tell you in that pesky commandment stuff in church about "bearing false witness"?

(2,252 posts)...at age 64!
Last November I ran a 50K (31.7 miles) five days before my 65th birthday, as an early celebration of surviving to retirement age. It was a tough dirt trail course, but I finished first in my age group....which consisted of exactly 2 persons, and 88th out of a total of 175 finishers...which is exactly middle of the pack. I was pretty happy.
I have been a distance runner since my first race...the Pepsi 20 mile run in Clarksburg CA in 1978, with a finish time of 1:58:38 and 46th place. I have 129 marathons/road 50ks under my belt, including 36 under 3 hours; the best was the San Francisco marathon in 1988 - 2:40:39, for 151st place; then San Francisco 1981 - 2:40:48 for 61st place,...and the list goes on.
My best in a 24 hour run on is at the Pacific Rim One Day Run 2008: 119.5 miles (192.3 kilometers).
I have 9th, 10th and 13th place finishes at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run (1987, 1985, 1986)
My total racing mileage 1978 to 2017 is 6655.86 miles.
Do you think I am a potential replacement for Mr. (turd) Ryan?

(15,199 posts)I'm a total wimp compared to you! But we all do the best we can with what we have.
Last Fall I participated in a 10K in my town that was a loop - uphill both ways - and my knee decided to misbehave at the 7.5 K mark. So I hobbled to the finish line (a motorcycle cop kept trying to pick me up). It took me an hour and a half!!! But I made it. The funny part is that I received a certificate in the mail a week or so later that I was the top finisher in my age group.
And I would totally vote for you to replace Ryan! Distance running takes the kind of determination and stamina that Treason Weasel doesn't have.

(2,252 posts)...is NOT a wimp.
And you went on to finish as a tough course, the first in your age group, despite pain. That's a significant accomplishment.
I have had to gut it out for several of the races I've run and always felt satisfied, despite the "minor pain"...
... however, one of the entries in the spreadsheet where I record my running history reveals a sad truth...
It was at the Pacific Rim One Day Run (aka 24hour run) at Lake Sacajawea, in Longview, WA in 2010;
I reached the 100K mark in 10 hours, 15 minutes 18 seconds; 100 miles in 18:54:02; then I struggled
for 12 more tired and drowsy miles before I wimped at ~22:30.
Whenever I look at that entry in my spreadsheet I get totally disgusted ... I could have walked a slow pace
for the last 90 minutes, done at least 6 miles more to surpass the distance I reached in the 2017 Pac Rim One Day.
One of the best things about distance running is that it teaches us who we are and who we want to be.

The half marathon is my longest race and I am planning to do another one later this year. A friend of mine (my dog trainer) does ultra marathons. I am in the Pacific Northwest and running is huge in my town - which is very hilly. It's wonderful to have a real running community here.
