Where they show a couple of minorities in the commercial and they look very mainstream and normal. They tell about what they do and at the end of the commercial, they say, "And I'm a Mormon..."
Nothing unusual about that in itself but these commercials have been going on for 2 or 3 years at the least, long before Romney was the nominee for President.
The person that makes the commercials is a big PR person in the Mormon Church.
They seem to be saying, "See, we are not a cult.."
That's just my opinion.
on edit: changed "candidate" to "nominee" for President.

(14,549 posts)They want to go mainstream. They may get some push back from the big evangelical churches if they start to carve into their membership.

(5,756 posts)Something like "Just because we follow the teachings of a con man who found then couldn't find those golden tablets. Follow a cult-like 'religion' that is obsessively secretive, that until the '70s wouldn't let dark-skinned people in because dark skin was a sign of sin. Follow a religion that subordinates women still. Follow a religion that believes Jesus visited the New World. Just ignore all that. We really, really are just like all of you."
I guess if you put it in context that they believe crazy shit in the name of alleged profits and invisible sky people just like so many other religions they are just like most everyone else.

(17,342 posts)I think my Southern Baptist mother was kind of intrigued, but as young as I was (8 or 9) I recall thinking - These folks are as nutty as the xtians if not worse.
I was thrown out of Sunday school when I was 7 for asking "impertinent" questions.
