Come after him at some point. Its hard to believe he was surprised by the FBI raid and that he got rid of a lot of evidence.

(12,344 posts)The whole point of doing illegal things with lawyers is to hide behind privilege. It's not easy to overcome that privilege so he must have assumed he was safe.

(52,438 posts)I agree he's an arrogant incompetent idiot if he thought he was immune, but yeah, that's exactly what he appears to be.

(9,500 posts)I thought so also, but its not like he has great legal minds as lawyers. Cohen was only successful by browbeating people too poor to survive a prolonged legal fight, and either settled or lost when that didn't work.
So there is a possibility that they were too stupid to get rid of any evidence. Hubris is a leading cause of stupidity.

I wouldn't try to extrapolate their motives and actions assuming a firm understanding of how the law works.

(9,291 posts)Only a fool would be running his mouth about paying a porn star for the President. Then whine how he wasn't paid back. He believed he was untouchable because of Trump.
Trump never pays well, so you never get the top ring of any profession.

(27,821 posts)Cohen has always seen Trump as invincible, a man who always wins no matter what, a true untouchable who can do or say anything and get away with it.
He probably thought (oh, so wrongly) that once installed in the White House, Trump's power would be unlimited - and that he could use that power to protect his friends from literally anything.
I think it will take a while for the truth to sink in that his all-powerful buddy isn't as powerful as he claims to be.
Cohen is also about to find out that when it comes to Trump, loyalty is a one-way street and that he'll throw his Fixer under the nearest bus the minute it serves his own purposes.

(10,175 posts)with bullying, lying, cheating, threatening, and other tactics that would make the Mafia proud you come to expect you can continue to do anything with impunity.
Or Cohen is a total incompetent, which seems to be the only kind of person that will work for Donnie Two-Scoops these days.

(13,340 posts)Cohen is not actually all that bright.
He's very used to evading the law pretty easily, because frankly white collar crime is very expensive and time consuming and is often not pursued very aggressively.
In short, he is USED to getting away with shit, and is convinced that Trump is a genius and will save him, of necessary.

(14,202 posts)* Attended the lowest ranked law school in the country and was at the bottom of his class.
* The way he screwed up the Stormy NDA indicates he makes a far better tough guy than a lawyer with any competence.
* Cohen/tRdump may have thought they could get away with murder in any dealings involving tRdump's criminal syndicate because all the documents and all the communications were privileged and protected by the attorney/client off limits clause.
I would not doubt that these goons thought the fire wall of privileged communications was so tall, so wide, so deep, and so strong it was impenetrable even to Mueller.
I'll bet all the nasty, illegal, and shockingly outrageous records of decades upon decades of tRdump criminality was scrupulously held in repository ONLY with Cohen. If they really thought the attorney/client privileged absolutely invincible there might by an unbelievable trove of juicy information just waiting for Mueller's discovery.
The whole Congressional Library plus the kitchen sink of incriminating material will spill out of Cohen's files for Team Mueller's use against them. And so much of the information is linked to blatant criminal conduct and behavior - the claim of Atty/client privilege means not a damn thing. Acts of fraud or criminal conduct renders that concept of privileged communications null and void.
Too bad Cohen and tRdump were not familiar or aware of that reality. Cohen is tRduup's fix it man and tough guy thug lawyer. But that combination falls way short of being a competent attorney of law.
Dry toast is what comes next on the menu for them, no butter, no beverage to wash it down. Team Mueller will spoon feed these boys shit for dessert. This is going to be fun watching these goons get what is long over due in coming to them.
