WCCO AM 830 features an evening talk show with Jearlyn Steele. She usually focuses on entertainment stuff during here 7-11 PM time slot, and that's usually enough to lull me to sleep. Last night, though, during the 9PM hour, she took a political turn, and put this question out and asked for callers to respond: "If you're a Republican who plans to vote for Romney, call in and tell us your reasons for voting for him. What about Mitt Romney and his positions leads you to vote for him?" That's a paraphrase, but that was what she asked.
A number of callers responded to her. I didn't hear a single one who actually stated anything about Romney or his positions as a reason to vote for him. Several said that it was Obama and they were voting for Romney to get rid of Obama. Another said she was a lifelong Republican, and she would be voting for Romney because "The party has picked the best person for the job." The host pressed callers to say what it was about Romney that was getting them to vote for him, over and over again. Nobody had anything. It was very revealing. Nobody could point to some position Romney holds as a reason. Nobody could articulate any real reason other than he was not Obama. I finally turned the radio off and went to sleep.
This is what the GOP offers its voters: Not Obama. They've got nothing else. Mitt Romney is just Not Obama. From where I sit, that's not a winning characteristic for Romney. I call the election for President Barack Obama, based on that alone.

(47,675 posts)There are more reasons to vote for Obama than I can think of, but there's nothing about rMoney that would qualify as a reason to vote for him. All he has to work with is "vote against Obama".

(146,341 posts)We should always have a real candidate. If we do, we'll keep winning. It's a lesson. This year, the GOP has a cardboard candidate, and they'll lose.

My advice? Set traps.
Like really, really big sheets of flypaper or something!
To appropriate a phrase from Pokemon: "We gotta get 'em all!"

Granted, Dems are more likely to sit out an election than the rabid right wingers, but hopefully we won't end up with romney..
