While Sanders headed deeper into the South, local reporters were told they must arrive earlier to the town-hall conversation between Sanders and Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba in Thalia Mara Hall than any logical person would show up for a flight. The call time for reporters was between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., and doors were not supposed to open to the public until 6 p.m., although many eager Sanders supporters arrived far earlier.
The City also told local reporters that they could not leave after checking in without waiting in expected long lines for the public, which did not materialize. It also did not provide refreshments, including bottles of water, for what was a required hours-long sojourn to wait for the event.
Most of the local reporters obliged, meeting the City's communication manager, Kai Williams, in the muggy mezzanine before the event. Williams said earlier in a press release that local reporters could do interviews with the two headliners on that balcony following the program and told local reporters in person Wednesday that Sanders and the mayor would likely talk to each outlet individually.
"Really?" various reporters replied incredulously.
Williams walked that back later saying the pair might talk to local media in a gaggle. Nevertheless, Williams confirmed that the senator and the mayor would be available for questions following the town hall.
But, neither of the two men would show upnor did Williams.

The Mayor and Senator would be available to local media...then shunned them for only a select few National media outlets. A blurb from the National Media...a national spotlight...the local media that keeps constituents informed are shunned. I don't like what I am seeing here. The Mayor seems more concerned with the spotlight than the people that elected him to serve their needs and a Senator that is obviously campaigning for their votes in 2020, obvious now...no doubt in my mind, dismisses them as he shuns the local media. Perhaps it is the tough questions they do not wish to answer.

(28,151 posts)I should think if one is all about the little guy, letting local press do coverage could lead to opportunity for those locals.
But I don't think that's on the radar, much less a goal.

(17,984 posts)Bernie has shown me how he is really just the left's version of tRump: self absorbed and only willing to say or do something that serves his interests (like taking the bullhorn at the NeverAgain rally). I admit, in the primaries, I liked him. I got suckered in. Now I know better.

Me.
(35,454 posts)The truth keeps being told and there are those who refuse to believe it. The behavior of those two was disgraceful and everything they rail about and just the sort of thing that gets that pointed finger turning in the direction of other. And considering the day and why they supposedly wanted the press presence, their behavior was also disrespectful not only to the man but to the people who gathered to commemorate him.
And the poor working class local journalists that were told to be there 3-4 hours before the event...promised interviews and were shut out. Not the Mayor, Senator or the Organizer bothered to show up. Only the 'SELECTED' few National Media types were allowed an audience.
Hmmm.
