Punishing women with the death penalty would cut abortions, Idaho candidate says

A Republican lieutenant governor candidate on Tuesday softened his stance that women who get an abortion should be punished if it is ever criminalized in Idaho, a day after saying the punishment should include the death penalty.

“Prosecutions have always been focused on the abortionist,” said Bob Nonini in a statement. “There is no way a woman would go to jail let alone face the death penalty. The statute alone, the threat of prosecution, would dramatically reduce abortion. That is my goal.”

Nonini first raised eyebrows on the divisive social issue during a Monday candidate forum in Moscow hosted by the conservative Christian podcast CrossPolitic. “There should be no abortion and anyone who has an abortion should pay,” Nonini said.

Pressed by moderators on the nature of the punishment, Nonini nodded in agreement when asked if he supported the death penalty as a possible outcome for abortion. Nonini, a three term state senator from Coeur d'Alene, confirmed that position in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Human life is so important to these "People", except when it crosses the line of their religious beliefs.

Then it's ok to kill more, but of course just the mother.

Because the "Father" is innocent didn't you know?.

Personally I love children and would never wish for an abortion except in cases of a undeniable medical need.

But I will always stick to my beliefs that IT IS NOT MY DECISION AND NEVER WILL BE.

It is ALWAYS the woman's decision, I don't have to worry about being involved in this situation ever again but my beliefs will never change.

There is no argument.

It is estimated that between 30 - 40% of women in this country has had an abortion in their lifetime. how will they feel when it is their mother, daughter, sister, wife's head on the chopping block? The odds are that at least 1 of them have had an abortion.

I am not sure he knows it yet..but he will. I looked it up, and five others are running for "lieutenant governor" in the Republican primary...and that one comment shows how stupid he is.

No matter what his position is as it changes one way or another..that kind of statement is indeed his...."political death penalty." How stupid can one be? Well, maybe he will win the primary..maybe he won't win..

But with 5 others running maybe the people of Idaho in the Republican primary, will select a ..."less stupid person.."

outlawing the sex act for women. That will stop them abortions, by golly.
Pregnancy would be a sure sign that sex had taken place and thus punishable - maybe by death.
That should solve this problem within a generation!

Lying sack of shit. That is not your goal or you would sponsor legislation that provides sex education & free birth control to any person of reproductive age who asks for it.

People who say things like this have no business holding public office. Hopefully he never will.

I wish these “pro life” people would just be honest. They are not “pro life”. They are pro Caucasian male Christian with a bit of fetus and invisible sky being fetishization and a dash of non-stop warmongering thrown in.
