ABCs Roseanne revival settled in last night with a slice-of-life episode focused on parenting after the premiere tackled President Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and the election. The ratings took the inevitable dip but remained impressive 15.1 million viewers and a 3.9 rating among adults 18-49 in the fast nationals at 8 PM last night. Vs. the 8-8:30 PM part of the double premiere episode last week (17.7 million, 4.9/21), Roseanne retained 84% of the debut audience and 80% of the adults 18-49 rating.

So, the expected drop off and a better hold than Will & Grace with its second week revival.

(6,930 posts)I simply find it revealing to learn what is important to certain folks. I understand that many follow celebrity tweets with breathless anticipation, but most of us do not.
Sometimes a tv show is just a tv show - making it into a major du gripe seems silly to me. Besides the fact, how can you comment on a show you have never seen?.. makes no sense.

1. I saw the first two episodes, so in fact, I have seen the show. Feel free to quiz me. I had low expectations, and they were met.
2. Id never support anyone by watching their show, buying their merch or any other fan activity who has slurred President Obama, Secretary Clinton, or anyone else who espouses progressive ideals.
To recap: Ive seen the show. Its low grade dreck. And it sucks.

Turns out it's just low grade pablum for folks who are easily entertained. But hey, what would you expect from someone who hates Hillary and Obama and believes in Pizza Gate?

(8,445 posts)I haven't seen anyone say this, but the acting is absolutely horrible. The only one who isn't painful to watch is Darlene, played by Sara Gilbert.
I was curious so I watched. The show got a lot of "hype" before its premier. I sure don't see it winning any Emmys. I think viewership will continue to fall off. But then again, sometimes people like to watch crappy shows, for whatever reason, so who knows.
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)Is it based off the live+7 that just added 8.81 million more viewers to the first week and the comparing the second without that same information available since it hasn't been seven days?
The fact that the opening hit 27 million+ viewers is just staggering.

(42,022 posts)Im not gonna watch it, but like a said before its a balm for white angst from what Ive read. In my opinion its success comes, in part, from my view that many white people are worn out from trying to not be racist. They want the pressure off, because the white community is full of racism. Its work, because racism is both overt and insidious. Rosanne the show attracts that demographic, it attracts people who like to watch their big TVs sitting on second hand couches, waiting for a raise, worries about racist Nanas disability (no hate, I have a big TV and a second hand couch, Im married to a man with MS; Rosannes targeted racist white-world IS my world, except I will never tire of trying to eradicate racism)
And its not a RW show, it just has an asshole for a star. Its been renewed for a second season, l am real curious to see what direction the show will take, and if it will indeed last.

(6,402 posts)I can't imagine Goodman sticking around for the long term outside of guest spots, just like Metcalf, as they have plenty of things to do. Gilbert can likely manage it fairly well around her time on The Talk, but that's probably dependent on how big of a pickup it is. If they're smart, they'll keep it short.
I still haven't seen more than a couple of minutes of the first episode during a walk-by and have zero interest in watching it. I like several of the actors (Sarah Chalke made Scrubs hilarious for me) but not enough to wade into what they're selling here. My work keeps me following tabs on a lot of entertainment types so it's just part of my daily work cycle to hear about these things.

(42,022 posts)The show is doing remarkably well in this age of streaming whatever-you-want-to-watch. The hype around it is in part, pure showmanship and self promotion by Rosanne Barr. Trump himself didnt hurt it. Or Fox news for that matter. It will have to maintain what is from all reports quality writing to keep people watching. I find it interesting the political line the show has to maintain as wellneither too left or too right to maintain viewership .
And the mercurial Ms. Barr will have to mind her ps and qs to a certain degree. I expect them to tackle a show on school shootings.

(653 posts)I didn't watch the show, nor do I intend to.
I'm not the show's target audience.
Didn't watch the original show either, was in my teens during its original airing, pre-teens to late teens, never caught it.
I actually liked Rosanne the person, not-so-much any more though.
I think the buzz of her Trump support garnered her the views, doubtful it will be sustained.
Remember Palin? I see this no differently than that.
Those viewers you speak of will tire, and when they do, the ratings will plummet.
Meanwhile, I'll just sit back and observe from a distance.

(7,683 posts)many commercials. We watch PBS and seldom network (except for sports) and it is hard to get used to all of the commercials. I read the reviews and some of the stuff they discussed (the black and brown statement) seemed silly to me. You have to be looking hard to get anything meaningful from the show. Not my cup of tea.
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)I never watch anything live at this point and I've been a TiVo owner since the first year they launched. One reason I get through as many shows as I do is because of that simple commercial skip button. Between that and a ton of streaming I always feel really weird when I get exposed to live programming with commercials.

(6,402 posts)It takes longer to get to things and the organization is terrible. They really blew it on the visual layout and navigational aspects. I get the desire to update as the previous really was the same design as they had since 2000, but man, they shot themselves in the foot by trying to look cool.

(949 posts)I read all the stuff - was expecting it to be a tribute to right wing garbage - it just wasn't there...
A lot of stupid unfunny jokes and an annoying as hell laugh track, but it was strangely apolitical..
A little violence on the mouthy grand-daughter, but that was about it for shock value.
Won't watch it again - just not funny - and anything with a laugh track just drives me crazy.
This from a guy who loved the old roseanne shows...
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)Which led nicely into the 90's standup boom and places like Comedy Central grabbing lots of britcoms that expanded my knowledge.
What I've found is that very few sitcoms from the 80's and 90's hold up today for a range of reasons. The more recent revivals like Will and Grace don't feel like they're coming from a different place and time for the most part. Roseanne from what I saw feels like it never grew up in a way, nothing changed in terms of the look of it all and it's just a straight continuation from season 8 (ignoring season 9 and all).
I know people are all about the fact that the couch is there and the chicken shirt and all that. But it just lacks that kind of natural growth most people go through in their environment, even when you're poor. It feels like it's a show very disconnected in the here in now and not like there's twenty years between the seasons.
cwydro
(51,308 posts)I expected more from the cast.
I liked the old show in the first few seasons, but they jumped the shark.

(55,445 posts)1. As a teen I was a fan and fairly regular watcher of the original show... You know, the one that conservatives hated more than any sitcom in history until Will and Grace came along...
2. No matter how much I love a show, I *HATE* reboots because they're lazy and derivative
3. So I haven't watched nor do I plan to
4. I find it impossible to fully hate anything that John Goodman is in so maybe he can succeed while the show fails?

(8,854 posts)I've been meaning to ask this question but I didn't want to start another Roseanne thread to ask it. So my question is: How did the writers resurrect Dan? I didn't watch the later seasons of Roseanne much back in the day and I only caught some of those episodes much later in reruns. The very last episode (I think) revealed that Dan had died, they never really hit the lottery, Darlene was married to Mark instead of David and a few other things that I can't remember.
I only watched about five minutes of the first episode of this new season but I didn't catch it from the beginning so I don't know how the things I mentioned were explained.
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)So the bulk of the season was "all a dream" as an easy out.
skypilot
(8,854 posts)...I thought that in the last episode she explained that what we'd watched was just her fictional "story" but then she went on to tell us what the "real" events were. One of the "real" events was that Dan had died. Or did I misunderstand the episode?
Blue_Adept
(6,402 posts)But my understanding was that they largely wrote the whole season off as a dream and have just moved on from there.
RandomAccess
(5,210 posts)The only thing they did, and I thought this was both clever and cute, was Roseanne and Dan were in bed, and Rosanne was yelling, "Dan, Dan" and he woke, sat up and he was wearing a CPAP mask. "I thought you were dead," she said. And he answered, "Why does everyone always think I'm dead?"
To my knowledge that was the only reference to it at all.
So, Dan isn't dead but now I'm wondering who Darlene is married to. Is she married to Mark or David? That "final" episode, which revealed a lot of events to be part of the book that Roseanne was writing, really confused some things for me. In that episode she revealed that she'd paired up Darlene with David for her story but that Darlene and Mark were the actual couple. I know that the actor who played Mark died years ago and the actor who played David is doing The Big Bang Theory, so it will be interesting to see what the writers do.

(10,478 posts)Episode 3 was a bit of a tv trope, the "teach the snaky teen a lesson", but still kind of entertaining.
Rosanne the person has become a stain on polite society, Roseanne the show is not bad.

(62,280 posts)I'd be shocked if the show was anything but a charming reinvention of the original. It's something to watch.
Then you put in Roseanne's antics on social media and it's something of controversy.
If anyone is stupid enough to think that Roseanne has any control whatsoever of the show they're idiots. The thing was copy-tested and carefully curated. And no I don't have to see it to know this. This is how all shows are made these days.

(6,402 posts)The ratings records keep coming for the debut of ABCs Roseanne revival last week. After setting a new record for the largest-ever total viewer Live+3 lift, the sitcoms Season 10 opener has scored TVs largest-ever Total Viewer L+7 increase for any single telecast on any network with a big +8.81 million viewer lift over its L+SD tally. That topped the previous high,+7.86 million gain for the 9/25/17 debut of ABCs new drama The Good Doctor. After seven days of delayed viewing, the audience of the Roseanne premiere has grown to 27.26 million total viewers (from 18.45 million in Live+Same Day).
