Former Benghazi Committee Chair Trey Gowdy: 'I Was Not Hyper-Focused' on Hillary Clinton

by Justin Baragona | 12:21 pm, April 1st, 2018

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-SC), who chaired the House Select Committee on Benghazi, doesn’t think he is part of the divisiveness that plagues Washington and national politics. And, in fact, he wants everyone to know that he wasn’t even all that focused on Hillary Clinton during the two and a half years the Benghazi committee was active.

Appearing on CBS’s Face the Nation to promote the book he co-authored with Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope For a Divided Country, Gowdy was pressed by host Margaret Brennan on his involvement in the two most politically divisive probes in Washington — Benghazi and the House Intelligence Committee investigation of Russian election meddling. “How do you reconcile those things?” Brennan asked.

“I hear about divisiveness,” Gowdy responded. “I just don’t hear about it from my colleagues. I hear about it a lot from people in your line of work, how divisive I am. And yet, I don’t have a fractured relationship with a single solitary Democrat that serves in the House.”

Stating that “conflict sells” and it is better for business to refer to things as “hyper-partisan” or “divisive,” Gowdy then claimed the investigation into Clinton’s actions during the Benghazi tragedy while she was secretary of state was basically apolitical. “The reality is, with respect to Benghazi, I did everything I could to handle that like a normal investigation,” Gowdy said. “I was not hyper-focused on Secretary Clinton. Lots of other people were, including people in your — with respect — in your line of work.”

The Benghazi committee lasted from May 2014 to December 2016 and cost nearly $8 million. Late last year, it was revealed that Gowdy used $150,000 of public funds to settle a complaint from a former aide who said he was fired because he wasn’t willing to focus his investigative work on Clinton.

Until our media focuses on truth — on objectivity instead of neutrality — the GOP will successfully rewrite history by lying.

And our media will be complicit in those GOP lies. Just like they are complicity in amplifying Gowdy’s lie now.

when he wasn't thinking about Hillary. Maybe when he was asleep (although he might have dreamed about her), or maybe when he was having it on with his wife (unless he was thinking about doing Hillary), or maybe when he was playing Sudoku, because it's pretty hard to think about anything else when you're playing Sudoku. So I guess if those things are true, maybe he could claim he wasn't hyper-focused on Hillary. Maybe.
