It looks like a different game from what I see here. Lots more physical. Pushing, shoving allowed. Why is that?

Plus, this is how basketball is played here, too, in college and pro, even in HS and "even" by women.

(63,914 posts)The reason I ask is that my granddaughter is playing (and liking) women's hockey in boarding school. She didn't realize that she would get so beat up playing it, but now she's adjusted and really loves it. So I'm wondering if it's different in the post school world....

(29,676 posts)This is for four years of bragging rights. The U.S. women are expected to dominate in this sport, even moreso than the men's basketball team. Any country who wants a chance with them had better play rough.
(I haven't even watched the Australia match but I can believe it's rough.I've watched the Aussie women play in college-DII and even a DIII-and they don't take prisoners. It's brutal, which is the only way to guarantee they play the U.S. By all rights, this is the U.S. team's to lose and the team that could take it from the are the Aussies.)

(56,177 posts)Is ignored...different rules allow for more physical play...took the UCONN, er, American women time to adjust today.

(63,914 posts)I don't watch any women's basketball except UCONN given where I am. Huge fans here in CT. So I am not used to seeing this stuff at this level, hence my disbelief in the way it is played in the Olympics...

(56,177 posts)I think there are 6 UCONN ladies...so it is half the team!

rough. Then our senior girls team played the jr boys. Different game. Totally different game. Really rough and tumble. I didn't enjoy it at all.
