On this National Walkout Day, two California schools were unable to participate in the nationwide protest because they were on lockdown. National Walkout Day, of course, was a nationwide, 17-minute long student protest commemorating the 1-month anniversary of the Parkland, Florida school shooting and honoring the 17 who lost their lives that Valentines Day.
Righetti High School in Santa Maria was locked down after several students received an anonymous text threatening that there was a weapon on campus.
At San Leandro High School, police were investigating bathroom graffiti that threatened Im shooting the school tomorrow at 1.
Both lockdowns have since lifted, though the danger these kids face surely hasnt. - PoliticusUSA

(2,315 posts)A very conservative estimate is that from half a million to over 1,000,000 students marched.
I am so proud of these young adults.
And smile realizing that some of them voted Tuesday, many of them will vote in November, and almost ALL of them will be eligible to vote in 2020.

(26,045 posts)I believe it was in Michigan, and it, too, was due to a lockdown
but not because of any threat. Rather, the administration called for the lockdown, and brought police in to enforce it, strictly to prevent any students from leaving class during the time scheduled for the protest. They even robocalled parents later in the day to explain it was merely to keep students from being able to protest.

(12,704 posts)We lived across the street, it was a rather large open campus.
Santa Maria is sleepy agriculture/oil/USAF town (Vandenburg is near by). But not too conservative, from what I remember, there was still a large immigrant (Italian and Japanese) contingent there, as well as one of the remaining California Land Grant ranches.

(7,522 posts)had a novel way to commemorate the students walkout. They went on lockdown because a 13 tear old brought a gun to school. They later found some kind of device that had to be defused. I'm betting my Local very Republican prosecutor will not punish whoever is responsible for this kid having a gun.
