Rep. Frank Wolf (r, naturally) of Virginia, has blocked the sale of the Thomson prison to the federal government because he says he "doesn't trust the Obama administrations claim that they are not going to move prisoners from Guantanamo to the prison".
I suppose I should clarify, Thomson is a real small town in Illinois which has a nearly empty state of the art prison which was never fully opened because of budget problems in Illinois. So the state is trying to sell it to the feds, the feds have agreed and this clown from Virginia comes in and rejects it. Again. And it only took one day to do so. He apparently doesn't care that this should create around 1100 jobs and would help the region a lot. No, he is just concerned about making a statement. Fuck him. And all of his teahadist, er, tea party buddies as well. Don't trust Obama. Better look in the mirror if you want to see someone you can't trust Mr. Wolf.

(16,038 posts)but I don't like the idea because I really question the need for more Federal Prison space..we should be ending Raygun's war on drugs, de-fund much of the drug enforcement federal grants, and apply the billions to mental health services, addiction services....and healthcare in general..It is hard for me to get excited about 1100 new prison industrial complex jobs..

(16,038 posts)a new prison is to house inmates because there are so many WoD prisoners. If they didn't have WoD prisoners, there would be plenty of space in existing facilities. And no, you like the idea of 1100 new prison jobs, I hate the idea..

(12,336 posts)At the time, it was a hospital for the criminally insane, later on it converted to a state prison, albeit a minimum security prison. So I know that prison guard jobs are decent jobs. And as for my dad? He got laid off from there due to budget cuts (even way back then) and went to work at a major factory. And he made a pretty good living. We never wanted for anything.

(16,038 posts)in many areas. I feel we...the 99%..should do anything we can to get jobs short of selling out the rest of the country. I've been in 3 Federal prisons professionally. I know that the people there have decent paying jobs. I would completely support and love the idea if instead of another prison they were putting in a "hospital"..state hospitals housed criminals with mental problems. They also did evaluations and housed other people who were civilly committed. Civil commitment began ending when Raygun cut off federal funding to help states fund the state hospitals. The result has made mental health services unavailable unless a person is able to pay..up front..or commits a criminal act...then they go to the psych ward at the prison. The result is a lot more people with mental disorders walking around with no way to stabilize, doing crazy shit.

(53,661 posts)There may be no such intent in the purchase of this prison or rather the blocked purchase, as you say.
When Obama attempted to fulfill his promise of closing down Guatanamo by bringing the prisoners to the mainland as was done in WW2 with German POWs, there was a firestorm of hysterical commentary on media and by GOP legislators. Their weapon to deny Obama doing so was to not fund the transfer or a place to keep them other than Gitmo. This guy rode on the same wagon then, probably.
That was early on, when Obama's call for infrastructure work and hiring young people was greeted with Rush and Beck and the rest of the right wing loonies saying he was going to install his version of the Hitler youth. Some people seem to have forgotten the storm that was generated and the GOP vowing to not fund any such thing, so no WPA, no CCC.
Thanks for bringing this story, this is who we're up against, those who obstruct any plans for employment or growth. It's unfortunate that the world being what it is, that the people of Illinois need this for work; but then, it's always been this way.
It's interesting that the GOP believes Obama plans to close Gitmo when so many less informed don't know he tried.
