Rick Perry: The world can either commit to fossil fuels or go back to the mid-1800s

To the Trump administration, the world is facing two choices when it comes to the future of energy: more coal and fossil fuels, or a return to the 1800s, when people lit their homes with lanterns and got around via horse and buggy.

At the annual CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, reporter Lisa Friedman asked Energy Secretary Rick Perry about certain countries’ plans to stop using coal. Mocking the decision, Perry responded, “I think it’s a fool’s errand to stand up and say ‘by 2030 we’re going to be done with fossil fuels’ … and what? Go back to living like we were living in the mid-1800s?”

Perry seemed to ignore the fact that he runs a department that oversees many of the federal government’s renewable energy programs. Experts in Perry’s own department have made clear that, not only are coal and nuclear uneconomical, but renewable energy keeps getting cheaper and more reliable.

about renewable energy. He is just too stupid to understand the concept. I think he really believes what he is saying here.

technological civilization would be the presence of Dyson swarms (spheres). You know giant solar collectors in orbit around the sun.

We are doomed as a civilization.

Of course he has no idea what he's talking about, but he's roughly right.

We're a long way from having no fossil fuels being used for aircraft. Probably true of cargo shipping as well. Elon Musk will probably keep using some extract of fossil fuels for his rockets. Of course ALL THE OTHER uses could go away very quickly over the next 30 years. Which of course is the VAST majority of its use. And that's basically petroleum. Coal is dying so fast no one can keep up. I'm trying to guess when the gasoline will become a problem of availability. I can remember when we hit the tipping point for "leaded" gas. It's not that there WEREN'T any cars that needed it. It was that their were so few that the places selling it became few and far between, and then those cars became VERY unpopular. Still some around today. I still think they sell octane booster for them.

https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-carbon-emissions-in-2017-fell-to-levels-last-seen-in-1890

and that's for the country as a whole (I'm not sure if it includes Ireland or not). On a per capita basis, we're roughly down to the 1860 level at the start of the graph, since the UK population then was about half what it is now: http://www.tacitus.nu/historical-atlas/population/british.htm

This is because coal use has plummeted, and all coal power station use due to end by 2025. We still use a lot of gas, for electrical generation and heating, and oil for transport, but emissions really can go down, and Perry really is talking shit when he says coal must come back.
