Lone Democrat running for open seat, Orange County Commissioner-FL

Looks like a long shot, but he needs all the exposure he can get, I imagine.

5 candidates seek Orange commission seat once held by Mildred Fernandez

Michael Aviles is a 29-year-old bartender and new to politics. He's the only Democrat in the race and one of two Hispanics; his father is from Puerto Rico, and his mom is Colombian.

Aviles raised $4,504 in campaign donations through July 6. That's the smallest sum in the race, but one of his bigger gifts was $250 from past county Democratic Party chief Doug Head.

Aviles has received no endorsements outside his party but stresses his community roots. He wants better youth programs and, for instance, to work with graffiti artists to find safe art outlets that avoid vandalism.

"What we need is a perspective from the inside looking out, not the other way around," Aviles said.
