If he declines a request it could go to the SCOTUS like it did with Nixon and the tapes and almost did with Clinton I believe. He is experienced at it but his lawyers are worried about what he could say that would be harmful.

(15,805 posts)letting Mueller get hold of Trump. They know that Trump can't be silenced and he's too stupid to know the danger he's in so he will happily blab about everything because he's a genius, doncha know!

(22,034 posts)Consider the broad outlines of the circumstances. Robert Mueller is conducting an inquiry into Russian interference in the U.S. 2016 elections along with any criminal acts he discovers during his investigation. There are so many connections between Trump's campaign/transition/administration and Russia that this is the primary focus of the investigation with a secondary look at any financial acts by the individuals/groups discovered in their queries.
Remember that Trump's greatest vulnerability is related to his personal finances. Trump has already made the ludicrous comment that if Mr. Mueller looks into his finances, that would cross a red line. Bullshit. Mr. Mueller has a mandate to follow the evidence.
So, Trump will have a series of binary choices going forward.
1. He can either agree to an interview with Mr. Mueller's team or he can try to claim Executive Privilege. If he agrees to the interview, he can have his attorneys advising him throughout the interview and he'll be able to make credible arguments against answering some questions. If he and Mr. Mueller cannot agree on the terms of an interview, then we move on to the next step.
2. Mr. Mueller can subpoena Trump through one or more of his Grand Juries. In the unlikely event that Trump complies with the subpoena, he'll have to testify under oath without his lawyers being present. That would be the end of his presidency since he cannot tell the truth and will commit multiple acts of perjury. The alternative is he could contest the subpoena(s) thereby delaying a decision until the Supreme Court either hears the case or, more likely, declines to hear it since they've already made this ruling. Ultimately, Trump will have to testify.
3. Having been over-ruled by SCOTUS, Trump can either submit to the testimony and that loops back to the first half of #2 above. Of course, Trump is exactly the kind of person to try to ignore the compulsive testimony.
Then what?
Actually, by that point, I believe most of the GOP will have abandoned Trump in order to try to save their own asses. Meanwhile, Trump and his scum & family will spin away, one way or another.
How pathetic is it that this is what's become of our country?
Thanks, Trump. Hey, GOP: You suck.
