US hockey team defeats Finland 4-2 to win gold medal at Lake Placid Olympics.

(32,093 posts)They had to go through the Soviets to get to the gold medal round. The anniversary of the "Miracle on Ice" was Thursday.

(32,093 posts)The set-up was different back then. They went by points, not by elimination, as is done currently. They had to beat Finland to win the gold medal.

(18,770 posts)Was round robin, not elimination. The win over ussr guaranteed the us would medal but need to defeat Finland for the gold, the would have meant silver and a loss would have left them with bronze

(32,093 posts)I remember watching that game in the lounge of my dorm, with a bunch of other people from my floor.
I'm watching a different sort of "miracle" at the moment...the men's curling match. Well, the re-run, as the actual match was on during the wee hours of the morning here. Not the same as that hockey match, but it's always fun to see the underdogs win. On that note, GO GERMANY!!!

(18,770 posts)The game against the Soviets was not televised live, I listened to it on the radio earlier. If I had been old enough to go to bars I could have made a fortune betting on the finish of the game
I plan to watch the curling match after I get done working today. It sounds like it was rather incredible

(32,093 posts)I didn't hear the game, but that was something that couldn't be kept secret. I was stunned when I heard the score on the radio.
