Donald Trump, a lifelong New Yorker, has never visited the Statue of Liberty

That is one major twist I gleaned from his comment asking why people from "s***hole countries" come here.

My thought on this is that the people from those countries understand America a lot better than its current President.

It was a big joke in college, a way to identify New Yorkers, along with not knowing how to drive.

I don’t know how many of New York pupils actually go. Though I’d guess you only have one shot and if you happen to be sick that day that’s it.

I kinda get it. I saw the statue as a tourist when I was a kid growing up in Ohio. Later in life I worked in manhattan every day for years and never once visited any of the hot spots I walked past on my commute.

I even stayed home when my family went once. I was like why on earth would I wanna do my commute again on a Saturday?

I've gone past it a number of times on the Staten Island Ferry (best bargain in NY - takes you past Liberty Island, Ellis Island, best view of downtown skyline - 1/2 hour over, 1/2 back and it's FREE unless you bring a car on). This is not uncommon for NYers. We figure we'll get everywhere eventually when someone comes into town and wants to visit. I didn't go to the top of the Empire State Building until I was in my 40s.

I have been on a school trip to Ellis Island though. I have great grandparents on the wall.

I wanted to see where my Great Grandparents came into the country. Ellis Island and Lady Liberty was a holy place for me.
