Lawrence just said his parents came from Ireland, considered a shithole country...

lots of people on TV reporting shithole tonight. Lawrence said it's gonna be hard to parents to explain this to their kids. But isn't that the normal these days?

they were considered to be horrible. They were looked down on. Especially true in the 19th century at the time of the Civil War.

The ships were called coffin ships because of the high incidence of typhus aboard. Public health officials at ports in Canada and the US quarantined the ships offshore as a (for real) public health hazard. One of my ancestors started out with her whole family and ended up with just one sister by the time they landed in Canada. They then lied their way across the border into the US.

Illiterate? Mostly. As punisment for Irish obduracy in clinging to Roman Catholicism and refusing to convert to English Protestantism, Irish schools were closed and forbidden.

In the worst assessments, Irish immigrants were considered "apelike" and "incapable of assimilation."

It's a pity all the "white" people in this country don't remember how their ancestors were received when they got here, and practice a whole lotta empathy for newer arrivals.

They were abused, treated very badly. They were better off than slaves because at the end of their term of indenture, they were free -- supposedly -- as long as their master had not impregnated them or married them off to someone. They were better off than the slaves, but they still suffered a lot. We forget that part of our history. Conveniently.

Parents must be truthful, but understand that it might take time. Kid's mature differently. Keep up the discussion.

Not that it matters, just that wiki just says his parents were of Irish descent.

But anyway yeah anything non-WASP was derided as a shithole even the Germans (where Trumps ancestors come from).
