If anyone doubts voting in local elections isn't serious business, they need only watch the short clip below where a Louisiana teacher is ARRESTED and put in handcuffs because she asked for a raise at a school board meeting. As this clip shows, Republicans will not hesitate to use fascist tactics to retain their monopoly.

(58,785 posts)and that's how I would have said it: "people don't pay attention." It's part of the human condition.
Speaking of Americans specifically, after 228 years of stable democracy, Americans have far better excuse for thinking it couldn't happen here than those of something like 150 other nations.
For all our current dangerous stupidity, Americans have overall been doing something more right and longer than most peoples have achieved.
Our traditions and expectations borne of those 228 years of democratic republican government make it far less likely that it can happen here than, say, in Germany, which had about 15 years of experiment in representative government during the period of misery between Kaiser and Hitler. Or Russia, very similarly. Also Iran. All authoritarian cultures returning to authoritarian government.

(11,561 posts)To paraphrase, when people show you who they are, believe them. Republicans have repeatedly demonstrated they don't believe in the rule of law for themselves. It's only for the other guy. Since strong public schools are the foundation of democracy, it's easy to understand why there has been a multi-decade attack on our public schools by Republicans. Uneducated people are much more easily manipulated.

(6,679 posts)She was arrested because she was out of order and refused to step down. The subject matter didn't matter.
This teacher did the right thing. Not because of the money, though that matters too. But because any government who refuses to listen needs a spotlight on it. She got herself in handcuffs deliberately....
Good for her. More of us need to refuse to sit down and shut up.

The professional future of Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau appears murky.
Earlier this week, the districts school board completed the first of a two-part evaluation of Puyau. The board is now finishing the second part of the evaluation, but some say the superintendent may lack the board support to stay in office.
Board President Anthony Fontana said he has heard concerns that Puyau is intimidating toward some teachers and principals. Fontana does not share those beliefs, calling Puyau the best superintendent Ive ever worked for.
Board member Laura LeBeouf said she is concerned about several aspects of district operations, including staffing, finances and what she considers a lack of strategic planning.
MY NOTE: THE SUPERINTENDENT SHOULD BE WORKING FOR THE BOARD, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. A year later, the board president Fontana sued board member LaBeouf.

The suit says Lebeouf conspired with other board members to skip meetings which unlawfully sabotaged the boards ability to conduct business because the board didnt have the members necessary to vote on important issues.

In May 2016, Puyau received a negative assessment from some members of the school board, USA Today reported. They pointed to district spending and his attitude toward employees as a reason why.

(118,282 posts)the teacher removed from Monday night's school board meeting has been booked into jail.
Records indicate Deyshia Hargrave was booked into the city jail with remaining after being forbidden and resisting an officer. The cooperation of the school system would not be required to arrest her on either of those charges; the officer could arrest her on his complaint.
Superintendent Jerome Puyau told KATC Monday night that he called to ensure that police knew the system was not pressing charges against Hargrave, but she was booked anyway, records show. She has since bonded out. City Prosecutor Ike Funderburk told KATC that the School System officials had called him this morning to reiterate that the system wasn't interested in pursuing charges ...
