(6,373 posts)It's a great city. Very modern, but still a low cost of living. Plenty to do. Not a massive city, but not small by any means.

(68,504 posts)I have no idea what would be best for them...I told my son...two good choices...college (nursing) or a great job in autos...two win wins. How do you like Florida? We often went there when we lived in Georgia. I don't like hot weather though. I can withstand the sub zero temps now but humidity and heat are miserable for me!

(1,900 posts)Low cost of living, housing very affordable, minor league pro sports, downtown undergoing renaissance, access to nature, Chicago 3 hour drive, Indy 90 minutes, good schools in SW and NW 'burbs. If one can get past the conservative politics it's pretty tolerable. Damned cold this morning though, 3 degrees.

(68,504 posts)It is below zero here in Ohio also today...trap on laundry pipe frozen...going to wrap it with heat tape.
the politics are the only drawback. We doubled the size of our house when we moved here for the same money. Good family town, great children's zoo and science museum, 100 miles or so of trail system too. Good hospitals and the GM truck plant is doing very well if that's the job opportunity.

(68,504 posts)Hubs worked for GM for 30 years...he started right out of college (engineer). Our son got himself a job on the line as he didn't like school and has done well. He was laid of last February in Ohio. The third shift went down...he had quite a bit of money saved. Also, his wife has a job. He is (was?) about to start college in January as it was looking less and less like he would get an offer. There must have been some retirements. I don't know how I feel about this. I was delighted he was going back to school...but GM will pay for his college if he takes the job;all of his friends laid of with him will go also. I don't know how his wife feels about this move...staying out of it...I will be sad if he is four hours away, but we left the East Coast for the South when Tarrytown New York closed and have lived in multiple states since. I missed my family, but you do what you have to... We live in Ohio, but since hubs lose his temp job at Delphi (plant closing) we are going to Cleveland which is about one and half hours away from Cortland where we live now. We bought a repo in Bedford Ohio and are fixing it up...A new adventure! I was a military brat (Navy- born at Great Lakes) so we moved quite a bit when I was a child. My youngest just went to college so I don't need a 4000 square foot house to clean!

(1,900 posts)and haven't regretted it. The cost of living would make it a decent place to retire and take a couple of six week vacations per year rather than retire somewhere more exotic but more expensive. Starting to consider thse things as it will come quicker than we think.
Best of luck to you and yours.
