Trump choice for judge has sordid N.C. history

BY WILLIAM BARBER II

Among President Trump’s worrisome nominees to the judiciary, perhaps none is as alarming as Thomas Alvin Farr, a protégé of Jesse Helms, the former North Carolina senator, and a product of the modern white supremacist machine that Helms pioneered.

Farr, nominated to serve on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, began his career as counsel for Helms’ Senate campaigns, where he participated in racist tactics to intimidate African-American voters. This alone is reason to reject his nomination, as is his apparent lying on the topic to the Senate Judiciary Committee. But Farr’s connections to Helms’ white supremacist causes and political network go much deeper.

Having lived in North Carolina since childhood, I know Helms’ racist legacy, and I hold no doubts that Farr perpetuates it. An unabashed segregationist, Helms was affiliated with the Council of Conservative Citizens, an outgrowth of the White Citizens’ Councils that promoted white supremacy. Helms, who served in the Senate for 30 years, used his honorable seat to support the apartheid regime in South Africa while opposing desegregation, civil rights legislation and the creation of the Martin Luther King’s Birthday holiday in this country.

I don't know about anyone else but this man is unfit to be on bench, let alone have a law license

He seems to be eager to nominate the most terrible people who will do the worst job. It's really like he wants to destroy every agency and the judiciary. But why? I guess he'll just do what the vandal hordes (Steve Bannon, Generalissimo) tell him to do, because he doesn't care about anything beyond trashing what his "enemies" (read: Obama, Clinton) have worked so hard to do.

is usually the correct answer when it comes to Trump's motivations for anything. Like you said he's just doing what Bannon and company are telling him to.

He doesn't really care about any issue at all. Well, maybe taxes a little for his own benefit.

What he cares most about is his image and if people adore him.

He doesn't know anything about the judges he's nominating or the federal rules and regulations he's rolling back. He is simply doing what Ryan, McConnell the like tell him to do. As long as they fawn over him he will keep doing their bidding.

I also suspect that they nominate some really horrible cretins like this guy to put up as a distraction and as a target they can withdraw. This helps distract while they get some almost as horrible people confirmed who will do just about the same amount of damage but don't hold quite the extreme views.

I suspect that they're nominating some really horrible cretins like this guy to put up as a distraction and as a target they can withdraw. Just like they've done with the idiots so far. Such as the one that couldn't answer basic questions and the one who'd never been in a courtroom apparently.

This helps distract us all while they get some almost as horrible people confirmed who will do just about the same amount of damage but don't hold quite the extreme views that make headlines.

Seems like a very good strategy and if I can think of it as a strategy so can they. I'm not the most astute political operative in the world so if I can come up with it they've already come up with it and are two or three steps ahead of me.
