As DUers how (or will) you respond to your own pro-45 friends, family,

etc. who have been praising and supporting him when he, his admin., and the RNC/GOP are found guilty of treason by Mueller? Will you say, "I told you so", not say anything, or keep the relationships open (forgive and forget their past political opinions)? If your relationships were ended over this fake prez, will you keep the ties severed? I am curious since I am going to have to deal with this issue myself.

1. My neighbor's son
Sat Dec 30, 2017, 04:26 AM
Dec 2017

My neighbor is 70 years old. And sort of racist. Not a blatant hater, but still racist. His son, about 30, loves Trump. I consider him too stupid to reason with.

However, he has a daughter with serious medical problems. Walmart just cut his weekly hours to 32 (he works in auto and know his trade) and he lost his insurance.

I am tempted to tell him about GOP war on worker's rights. Or how CHIP could help him if the GOP funded it. Or how the ACA would provide him with insurance (the sign-up time has been cut in half by Trump so he may be unable to get it this year. Or perhaps ever.).

He is in a horrible bind. His daughter's medical expenses (she needs repeated surgery because her cranial cavity is not growing fast enough) will bankrupt him and I doubt he can get the care she needs. I have no idea how he can handle this.

Talking to him about the GOP would be rubbing his face in a horrible tragedy. And would be useless anyway. I am confident he will find a way to blame black people (seriously!).

And also talked to his dad about ACA. I am hesitant to talk about much to him as he did not tell me about his situation and I only overheard him talking to his dad about it. I believe his dad will tell him what I said. If I had a suggestion that I knew would work I would tell him, but I am at loss. I do feel bad for him.

If they only cut his hours to 32, he is still entitled to insurance via Walmart. If they cut him to below 32 hours, losing his health insurance is a triggering event that creates a special enrollment period. It is generally 60 days, but you aren't tied to the generic open enrollment period if you lose insurance because your hours were cut, you were divorced, etc. I.e. he didn't just blow off the open enrollment period - he wasn't eligible for some portion of the generic open enrollment

If his daughter is disabled by her medical condition, she may be eligible for Medicaid or Medicare (depending on work status)

How would I respond to the people I used to be friends with if Mueller presents a damning report on more people in the Republican network including indictments (perhaps, if I dare imagine it, even Trump)? The same as I do now.

I’ll keep them blocked on social media and from my phone and enjoy some happy times with my more thoughtful peers and friends. Who are already a mix of Democrats and a few sane Republicans who see what’s taking place.

At work I’ll probably just smile a lot more. Much like I did when Obama was elected, twice. Those were good times. 🙂

Have numerous friends already saying they messed up voting for this idiot. One much younger friend who while we were out eating one day got into a very heated debate at our table, and I respected his views, and he mine, ended to agree we disagree. He called me the other day saying you were right, this guys a crook like we've never seen before, and he said he had realized he was taken, conned, and lied to, and how unfit for office he really was, and I just said I was glad and left it at that. He really is a nice guy, and smart, and caring but he finally saw how deranged, and crazy, and bad this guy is. He also said his family had seen the light too. Others I know have done the same thing, especially now that some are losing their health care, and some will see more skyrocketing costs, and one sees they want to destroy SS , which is on his list, the opposite of what he said. Their tax scam has gotten many stirred up against them now. Very unpopular, people getting pennies while they are getting millions.

I will not play that game. It can only lead to heartache. Instead I will try to gently convince my conservative friends that they hold incorrect views.

And if I fail at that, I will let it go. I will change the subject. Because they are still good people. They wish me and my family the best. And they will respond if I should call them for help at two in the morning.

I will not to equate being wrong with being evil.

Your story reinforces what I said in my post #39. Not all Republicans are bad. Not all conservatives are bad. Sure, some of them really are bad, really evil. But the majority of them are simply misguided.

To paint them all with one brush is wrong, very wrong. Instead of condemning them - or shunning them - we should be working to gently convert them.

On how nice and civil and forward-thinking it is. I try to take the high road your on, I admire that, but I admit to slipping off it about once per week.

But you’re absolutely right, not all Republicans are bad people. And yes, for the ones who can be reached, leading them gently— as if weaning someone from a cult— is an excellent approach.

Also, his write-in of Bernie, which I had no hand in, other than to talk him up a bit during the primaries, is proof that the genuine progressive message is beginning to sound good to more than just us on the left.

One of my hobbies is to tell conservatives that I know about Bernie. But I don't say - at first - that these ideas came from Bernie. It is amazing how much these conservatives agree with me. The rich really should pay more. Everyone is entitled to quality health care. Enough of all the foreign wars.

So yes, these pro-Trump conservatives really aren't bad people. They are just misguided. So I will not denounce them, or shun them. Instead, I will try to convert them, gently and patiently. I figure it's well worth the effort.
