Besides, Berryhill's point still stands. If they have this sort of capability, how could the government possibly stop them from revealing themselves?

It could be as simple as they do not choose to reveal themselves. If real, I often think it could be just exploratory probes, much as we investigate space, but they are further ahead. Now, could it be interdimensional probes ... I certainly don't know.
Yes, Berryhill made a very good point! My guess is if real, it's likely just probes, and perhaps have no interest whatsoever in an earth dialogue.

ProudLib72
(17,984 posts)Now there are some monsters from another dimension!
When I was a teenager, my parents and I took a trip to Scotland. We went to Loch Ness, of course. There is a loch adjoining Loch Ness (forget the name). It's said to have its own monster, and it is somewhat connected to Loch Ness. Anyway, there was a windsurf rental place on its shores. I was big into windsurfing at the time, so I rented one. I had to wear a dry suit (the one and only time I ever wore a dry suit). I remember getting on the board and taking off. The bottom dropped away, and all that was below me was very, very dark, deep, and cold water. Anything could have been lurking in it! Let me tell you, I freaked out. I think I lasted maybe an hour before the psychological strain was too much. Being alone on a windsurfer with nothing but a dry suit between you and a prehistoric monster is quite different from being safe on the shore surrounded by your family.
Irish_Dem
(46,918 posts)Yes, I don't think I would want to be windsurfing by myself in Lock Ness territory.
My Irish grandmother swore leprechauns were real.
She gave her grandchildren specific instructions about what to do

But have no idea what to do if one sees a Lock Ness type monster.

(38,419 posts)Yes, I believe they have been here and there. Honestly, I do.
But, like in one episode of Star Trek, (both original, and Next Generation) the aliens have decided to avoid lower levels of intelligence.. not get involved in their development (that is the development of the human race, that is.... us)... Get it together the aliens said in a famous 1950s movie where they landed on earth . The alien and his robot, warned us not to mess around with nuclear weapons. What was that movie?? (it was, "The Day The Earth Stood Still)..because of advanced technology..this computer..it took 5 seconds to get it by searching with google ..for "famous sci fi movies"...5 seconds. It would have taken an hour at a library maybe 40 years ago.
So they aliens AVOID US WHY? if the aliens have advanced that far, they are likely to have some kind of rules of involvement with societies of "lesser levels of development" It goes with the territory of space travel. (at speeds necessary to travel within the galaxy)
Now let us not get out of ourselves fellow DUers...That kind of attitude is not beyond our own thinking. The human race has been developing for maybe the last 200,000 thousand years.. Hell I don't know...but we have been moving along for a long time. Say in your minds, if we could go back in time, say 10,000 of those years, or even 5000, do you think it would be a good idea to interfere with the development of Egyptian Society? Or early societies in Asia? Or in Syria?... Yes, just 5000 years ago, humans had not developed beyond building by hand and with animals. No methods of modern communication and little understanding of what we call science. Just 5000 years of human development has brought about the machines which I am typing on right now. I watched Star Trek in the 70s, and never thought I would have a hand held communicator, that could double as a computer as well as a HUGE...VERY HUGE ..library.. That is in the last 45 years..
Now let's imagine some kind of advanced alien race, say just 5000 years ahead of us. Should that group get involved in our development? Give us more info to do whatever we could do? Or kind of leave us alone and monitor us, to see how destructive we will become?
Would it be wise, if there were some way..to go back in time, just 2000 years, to save the Roman Empire from its downfall. Help them out sort to speak?...give them some help..and increase human development to some higher level..(so we could destroy our planet sooner)...or just leave it all alone, and let it develop as it will develop. Hoping for the good, and not the evil ....
And why is it so impossible that somewhere on some planet not real far away..(whatever that is) the advanced species that thinks intelligently, scientifically, and with some level of kindness, has developed just 5000 years ahead of us? Would that species really want to get involved with a leader like Mr. Trump?
...Yes, the last leader made a lot of sense, Mr. Obama....but how could those people on earth pick a total idiot like Mr. Trump?...that alien species would think..that planet has a way to go. Yes, Mr. Obama looked good and maybe we could deal with him the aliens would think. But why get rid of him and put in an idiot, stupid human like Mr. Trump?.. or Mr Putin for that matter...............
The alien intelligent species would be wise to stay away from earth. Maybe when those "humans" get it together in another 1000 years. Then, they will contact the humans......maybe....???????????
Oneironaut
(5,492 posts)Imagine trying to explain how a smart phone works to a squirrel. It would be kind of like that. Sci-fi always assumes that aliens are all like humans (except slightly different). The differences might be so large that any form of communication would be impossible in the first place.
Secondly - aliens might see how we treat each other and say, "No thanks, I'll pass!" They might see our tendency to kill each other and the planet as laughably stupid.
RKP5637
(67,104 posts)the most part IMO, often think of anything extraterrestrial as being somewhat like humans, and everything seems to be viewed through those spectacles. I don't have the link now, but I did read someplace once that it is likely an extraterrestrial visitor could be about one billion years more advanced that humans. We have a massive ego, I doubt they would be very much interested in humans or earth.

(4,394 posts)Intelligent life evolved on at least one planet that we know about and there are at least 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the observable universe (and likely many more). The universe has been around for about 13.5 billion years with life on earth existing for only the last 25% of that time. The odds that the same circumstances that led to intelligent life on earth occurring on another planet prior to it occurring on earth, and that life developing technology that would allow interstellar travel is entirely conceivable given that we have evidence that intelligent life is possible, interstellar travel is possible and the enormous number of planets and age of the universe make the odds relatively good that there is life on another planet and that it is more technologically advanced than we are.
I think it is more likely that there are aliens than that our planet is the only one to ever evolve intelligent life. It's not like humans are made out of some rare material or that the earth is in some kind of unique circumstance. There are 10s of billions of habitable planets in the galaxy.
On the other hand, there is absolutely no evidence that any kind of supernatural deity has ever existed anywhere.
I don't "believe" in UFOs but I consider them statistically likely enough that they should not be dismissed out of hand. "Belief" in God, on the other hand, is naked self-delusion.
Kaleva
(36,294 posts)The debate here is that "Existence of UFO technology more advanced than human capabilities has been proven
beyond a reasonable doubt".
There's nothing in your post that supports that claim.
An advanced civilization capable of interstellar travel and sending out ark or generation ships traveling at sub-light speeds ought to be able to colonize the entire galaxy in about 2 million years. We have seen no evidence that that has taken place or is taking place.
It's possible that several hundred thousand advanced alien civilizations formed in our galaxy but it's also possible that, given the age of the galaxy, each one of them has gone extinct, as everything in the universe has a finite lifespan, and we humans are the only intelligent beings in the galaxy right now and no others will appear until millions of years after humans have gone extinct.
Furthermore, a Type III alien civilization on the Kardashev scale, the existence of such civilizations is statistically possible, would appear to us as gods. Confirm the existence of such a civilization and you confirm the existence of God.
meadowlander
(4,394 posts)They are qualitatively different. "Belief" in UFOs is extrapolated from observable phenomena. We know that intelligent life exists. We know that interstellar travel is possible. We know that there are a large number of habitable planets, that the circumstances that led to life on earth are not unusual and that the universe is very old. From that, we can posit a supposition that UFOs may exist.
"Belief" in a god is a leap of faith that something that has never been observed to have existed (a supernatural all powerful being) nevertheless does exist. This is then asserted as a fact, even in absence of evidence.
And proof of an advanced alien civilisation would not "confirm the existence of God". That is the worst kind of rhetorical poppycock. "God" actually means a supernatural, omniscient and/or omnipotent being. An advanced alien civilisation would still not be supernatural. You can't just throw the label at anything that seems very powerful or advanced.

(2,177 posts)In 1980 they were at a baseball game with my 5-year-old daughter in a Phoenix stadium. She nudgedher grandmother to ask what is that pointing in the sky. My mom looked up and poked my dad and said what the hell is that. There was a circular shaped object hovering in the sky above the stadium. He just said I don't know and please stop pointing. It was gone in a flash. For the life of her she could not understand why other people were not looking up in the sky. Years later I would occasionally find my PhD engineering educated father watching UFO shows on TV. I know he thought it was real. There have been a few sightings around this area since then.

(20,670 posts)Tyson explained that by their very nature, unidentified flying objects are, well, unidentified, so a video recently released by the Department of Defense showing a UFO off the coast of San Diego in 2004 doesn't faze him.
"The universe brims with mysteries. Just because you don't know what it is you're looking at doesn't mean it's intelligent aliens visiting from another planet," he said.
"Scientists live in mystery every day of our lives ... People are uncomfortable not knowing, not the scientists. I'm fine. We don't know what it is. Keep checking it out."

Maybe they came for a look around, didn't like what they saw and took. If they wanted to harm us they could've done so by now.
After years of saying whatever UFOs are they are not a threat, all of a sudden they turn on a dime and say they ARE a threat. I smell a rat but it's the same rat I've been smelling since November 2016.
