With the GOP assault on the FBI, I am really beginning to wonder if our country will withstand this crisis.

(31,131 posts)So the question is how many patriots do we have and how many party first idiots?
Right now I want to believe we outnumber them, not by much but that we do.

free or fair process.

(9,739 posts)"Democratic republic" is about as close as you can get, but "federated democratic republic" is closer. The United States Senate is one of the LEAST democratic institutions on earth. The one-half million people of Wyoming have two senators. So do the 39.5 million people of California. This lack of democracy carries over into the revolting excrescence of the Electoral College giving us presidents like George W. Bush and the current maggot occupying the White House. We can't lose what we never had.
Asked what kind of government the United States would have, Benjamin Franklin replied, "A republic, if you can keep it." I'm fairly certain we'll keep that, but I'd love to see the government become more democratic.

(28,886 posts)There hasn't been a free and fair election since Florida 2000..
except when anonymous helped Obama. For some reason,
they didn't help Clinton.
And even when we did have fair and free elections, our freely elected representatives felt free to ignore our wishes.

(635 posts)Our own government is actively working against us; sure seems like we're in a perilous place right now.
We've never had a real democracy in the sense of equal representation, but now we are in a situation where the majority of the Congress doesn't even represent their constituents. I am more frightened for the future of this country than I have ever been, and remember Richard Nixon.

Will #45 start a war somewhere, and spread fear like a flu virus, to ensure his administration remains cemented in place?
At the moment, democracy has failed us. We have one-party rule in all three branches of government. Our long-standing instutions, protocols, and yes, LAWS are being flouted every way, in multiple dimensions. We dont have a president, we have a right-wing banana-Republic dictator who demands in-front-of-the-camera praise (when hes not busy praising himself). His party those Republicans who cursed him during the campaign now laud him to the skies without shame. They are in the process of pulling a BENGHAZI!!! with the Mueller investigation screaming wall-to-wall lies about it, riling up their base, burning everyone else out from sheer repetition of message.
Its 2018 or bust the Senate MUST turn Democratic, and apply the brakes to the right-wing onslaught, or the game is pretty much over.
