There are no good hiding places for the GOP.
Thats the message a flood of looming Democratic candidates are sending to Republicans as the GOP braces for the 2018 election season, especially after the amazing flip of the Alabama Senate seat earlier this month.
Democrats are not only targeting vulnerable Republicans in the House who won in districts that Hillary Clinton carried in 2016, of which there are currently two dozen. Theyre also lining up to challenge Republicans in traditionally safe GOP districts. - Share Blue Media

(82,849 posts)Leaving the field open to uncontested Republicans in "safe" districts hasn't worked very well. Let's try recruiting good candidates and running against these miscreants and see if that changes anything.
By the way, if you're in one of those Republican "safe" districts, make a new year's resolution to donate some time, money, or talent to a Democratic challenger in 2018. It really can make a difference.

(56,829 posts)Even if they lose 90-95 of those 100 Republican "safe" seats, it means they are 5-10 seats closer to a majority overall. And, who knows if somebody in GOP leadership will have a George Allen "Macaca" moment and suddenly lose a safe seat?

Child molester on the other hand, was just barely enough to swing the vote!

(56,829 posts)Trump won Alabama by nearly 30 points. In 2014,Jeff Sessions ran unopposed and got 97% of the vote. So, in one year, Doug Jones swung the vote from -29 to +1, and in 3 years, the Democrat went from 0% to 49%. The child molester allegations came out late in the game and were from a media source outside of Alabama - with Moore denying the allegations, it was his word against women from 30-40 years ago.

(11,088 posts)And they don't have to be involved in every race. There were a number of races(challenges) won in 2006 and 2008 that the party didn't put any money into. Candidates can race independent grassroots support on their own, and the party can jump in later if it wants, but doesn't always need to.

Many of the races don't have candidates yet (they don't get involved with primaries) but there are benchmarks that they need to meet (fundraising, polling, etc) before DCCC will step in.

(56,829 posts)"nearly" is dropped from "nearly every seat"
when I looked at Jeff Sessions and the recent special election in Alabama, I shook my head in embarrassment that he ran unopposed in 2014! Unopposed! I don't care if you expect to get 25% or 30% of the vote, you don't let a guy run for the United States senate unopposed!! You never know what can happen.

Wait until the filing deadlines to see how many races are contested.
What we really need to focus on is state legislative seats and to contest every one of them. Many GOP incumbents in VA who lost in 2017 were uncontested the last time around.

(35,453 posts)When you leave races uncontested, that means that the Republican primary becomes the true election which makes it easier for the more extreme candidate to win as each candidate tries to out-conservative one another.
