Memories of a Special Winter Moment of my Youth - Big Bear John's True Story
Could there be anything more calming and soothing to your soul than the utter delight
felt by an 8-year-old boy waking up early one winter morning, all snuggled up tight
and cozy under a deep feather blanket as he gazes with sleepy eyes through the frosty
white glow of a frozen window pane framed by icicle spears hanging down from the eaves.
There's a deep, abounding stillness in the air as snowflakes drift slowly across the yards,
fences and rooftops, burying all and everything in their paths. The breathless whistle
of the wind outside my window somehow squeezes a path between the panes of the
old fragile glass, just quick enough to tickle my nose with a gentle puff of crisp fresh
winter air, waking me, as I smile with the joyful bliss of a young heart in love with life.
Oh what joy to gaze out my small bedroom window of our 100-year-old house to discover
that during the wee morning hours, four feet of snow has quietly blanketed the earth.
I couldn't be more happy and thrilled to be exactly where I am. Time stood still... allowing
a brief pause from the troubles of life. No school! No rush. No hurry. Nowhere I need to
be except right there. At peace. Pulling the thick goose feather blanket up to my chin. My
head buried deep into a fluffy pillow. With all the time in the world. Happy to just be right there
in the "now."
Tinkling icicles chime briefly against the window as Old Man Winter huffs and puffs down the
sparkling crystals from the eaves. As I peer through my private little window pane, all I can
see is a deep white blanket of fluffy snow taunting me... inviting me to come jump into its arms.
A deep sense of purity fills my whole being
as if the dirt and grime of a tarnished world has been
completely washed away.
If, only for a while, the universe seems to bestow on this child a brief repose from the
struggles of life, granting him audience to the beauteous artistry of Gods handiwork. The
world seemed to stop just for a moment to let us all breathe in the awesome wonders of creation and
best of all -- to feel grateful for our special place in it.
You are invited to come out and play with me.
May The Joys of this Special Season Fill Your Heart!
Love,
Big Bear John
