It doesn't excuse the horrible stuff he's supported over the years, and he's clearly not saying this as a service to the Democrats, but it is comforting to see prominent conservatives joining in the call to bring back some sanity.

(16,376 posts)I disagree with their politics but at least they seem to be part of the same country as we are. If the old fashioned conservatives and even neoconservatives peel away from the trumposhere , perhaps there's a chance of prying the nation and the world from Littlefingers.

(47,557 posts)The story as I recall it:
Krystal is a member of a number of conservative think tanks.
He met Palin at a dinner meeting and became enamored of her, and strongly backed
her as a rising GOP star. He succeeded, she became the GOP VP nominee, and that is when she gets dumped in Schmidt's lap for rehab.
Palin could not have risen so fast on her own merits, she had backing in high places.

(2,807 posts)I have followed him for a year and a half, Bill Kristol gets it. Bill Kristol gives scathing commentary to today's GOP. To read the postings of Bill Kristol will shock most Democrats who have loathed him the past 30 years. This particular post of his is not a one-off deal.
I keep trying to spread the word. FOLLOW BILL KRISTOL ON TWITTER! @BillKristol
You will be pleasantly shocked.
Bill Kristol, David Frum, Ana Navarro, Steve Schmidt, and Richard Painter are all Republicans you need to follow on twitter. Their voices are among the most honest, and scathing, regarding not just Donald Trump, but the Republican party that enables and promotes the most Un-American party planks.
Again, follow Bill Kristol.

(2,807 posts)No outside force or entity could ever challenge our Democracy. The threat, of course, had to come from within. These are the most perilous of times.
Tis why I advocate for these Republican voices who have joined our fight. I'll say it again, these Republicans are not just anti Donald Trump. Their voices join with ours in the fight against the entire GOP tyranny. They are honest and important voices, and in my opinion, are welcome to join with ours.
Not that I condone forgetting their past. I certainly don't.
America is under intense attack like never before. We are fighting a giant, well funded, and organized enemy who have spent 50 years building their infrastructure. Their propaganda is the most intense, well funded, researched and directed, in the history of this planet. Somehow they have gotten their followers to not only consume this propaganda, but to yearn for more. To pass it merrily among themselves, to want to propagandize themselves.

There are a good number of Republican pundits that are strongly anti-Trump - even a small number can make a big difference in the long run.

Was Palin the Harbinger of Trump?
Bill Kristol on whether we could have predicted the rise of demagoguery back in 2008.
On this weeks episode of my podcast, I Have to Ask, I spoke with Bill Kristol, the editor at large of the Weekly Standard, the magazine he co-founded more than two decades ago. A former aide to Dan Quayle, Kristol has for many years been one of the most visible conservative commentators, famous for his support of the Iraq war and so-called neoconservatism. Kristol has more recently become a loud voice in opposition to Donald Trump, first trying to recruit a challenger and now frequently attacking his assaults on democratic norms and institutions.
Hav
(5,969 posts)and he has been with numerous other observations this year as well. The cult of personality regarding Trump by some is indeed worrying. I hate pretty much every political position Kristol has and his known pro-war stance for basically every conflict to a point where he disgusted me, but in his reflections about his own party this year, he hits the bulls eye again and again.
I think Frum has been there since 2008 after Obama's election.
Clearly, everybody has to decide for himself how to process information from the other side. Personally, for me it's harder to understand how Comey is almost treated as a hero here from time to time for his tweets. He may very well be a decent guy but just thinking about the events in 2016 make me too mad to forgive him let alone cheer for him.

Personally, I'd say being the architect of the Iraq catastrophe is considerably more than a 'mistake', but Kristol himself doesn't consider it a mistake at all. He defends the invasion as the right thing to do to this day. But hey, at least he's a 'never-Trumper'.
