OK. But what to look for? The American website - which carries the banner ''Conservative Values for an Unsaved World'' - helpfully offers a checklist of telltale signs.

Is he overly fastidious about his appearance and the home? ''Natural men have a certain amount of grit about them. They sweat and they smell. Homosexuals often abhor this sort of thing …'' (Unlike women.)

Other queer stuff to watch for in your man: love of pop culture; clothes that are too tight and too trendy; feigning attention in church; gym membership, especially if he's not interested in sport; secretive late-night use of mobile phones and computers (unless he's watching naked women and talking to his mistress which, presumably, is natural).

Then there's the clincher: ''Does he wear a speedo at the beach?'' We gather that means Speedos, or budgie smugglers, the swimming attire preferred by conservative "Christian" Australian opposition leader Tony Abbott. Mr Abbott did tell Q&A this week: ''I know some gay people extremely well.''

But not so well, surely, that he'd borrow their togs.

Maybe these people need to spend some time with a veteran soldier that got booted out of the Marines for being gay.
