Effort to attack Obama on the surface being led by Dick and Liz Cheney, including Liz's absurd attack ad (Obama goes on vacation too much! Really??) is being funded by a major Republican donor: Mel Sembler, a Florida real estate developer, former finance chair of Republican National Committee, and current chair of the Scooter Libby defense fund.

Hi, I thought I'd post some extra information here that didn't make it into my AlterNet story on STRAIGHT, Inc. and Melvin Sembler, the Bush family friend who stepped down as U.S. Ambassasdor to Italy this year. A recurring Bush family crony, and RNC Finance Chairman from 1997-2000, his influential teen treatment business was shuttered by authorities for cruelty, in 1993 -- this despite having been named among the "thousand points of light," during its 16 years, by the first Bush.

For years, the Bushes have embraced a man whose private business subjected young Americans -- perhaps thousands -- to some of what we've seen in detainee prison scandals. After the ACLU accused his for-profit punishment centers of something "very close to really performing psychic murder," Sembler grinned and said, "It just shows we must have been doing something right."

There are indications that Sembler is connected to the shadowy, endlessly-intertwining group of "rogue" intelligence agents that Joseph Trento exposes in his book Prelude to Terror.

Sembler has long been on intimate terms with "Poppy" Bush, a key figure within this "old boy" gang long before he came to head the CIA. According to Joshua Marshall, Sembler also has a long-standing relationship with another notorious figure associated with the Agency (even if we cannot technically call him an operative): Michael Ledeen.

Sembler played a still-mysterious role in the 2002 interactions between Ledeen and the notorious Iran-contra figure Manucher Ghorbanifar. He played an even odder role in the tale of the alleged terrorist kidnapped in Milan by CIA personnel. Sembler denied that American intelligence personnel were involved in the kidnapping, even though both an Italian judge and former CIA analyst Michael Scheuer identified the operation was a joint CIA/SISMI venture. Sembler also may have helped to obfuscate the strange circumstances surrounding the "friendly fire" attack on Guiliana Sgrena in Iraq (which some believe was other than accidental).
