I worked in state psych hospitals in my youth without a single weapon. I had to learn to watch nonverbal reactions, listen to anything verbalized and predict upcoming actions. I had to learn when it was time to ignore, when to reason, to deflect. I learned when to move out of the way, to duck, to sidestep and sway. I learned several holds done solo, as a duet and even three man holds.

Not one single hold ever touched the neck. Not one hold.

We didn't make much more than minimum wage, we were always in danger and it was rare that our patients were hurt from their actions or our actions. What a-hole in their right mind would ever think that stepping on a neck is a valid hold! Is it stupidity or cruelty?
