YouGov poll: With Trump's trial underway, most Americans now believe he falsified records to hide hush money payment

For the first time, a new Yahoo News/YouGov poll shows that a majority of Americans (52%) believe former President Donald Trump “falsif[ied] business records to conceal a hush money payment to a porn star” — the charge at the center of his ongoing criminal trial in Manhattan.

This represents a new high — and a significant increase from previous Yahoo News/YouGov polls conducted before courtroom testimony began last month, suggesting that coverage of the trial may be shifting perceptions of Trump’s conduct. If the jury agrees, Trump could become the first former U.S. president convicted of a felony.

In contrast, just 22% of Americans say Trump did not falsify business records to hide a hush money payment to a porn star.

The new survey of 1,794 U.S. adults, which was conducted from May 10 to 13, also shows a dip in the former president’s favorable rating — from 45% in March to 41% today.

Tommy Tuberville admits he came to New York to break Trump's gag order

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has admitted he came to New York City Monday to break a gag order for former President Donald Trump. MSNBC Anchor Nicolle Wallace reported Tuberville's public admission, made on the conservative channel Newsmax, as part of her coverage on Trump's ongoing criminal hush money trial and the gag order the former president has been fined for repeatedly violating.

"I guess we love that he just gives it to us, right?" said a laughing Wallace. "Were you trying to go against the gag order and intimidate witnesses because Trump can't? 'Yes, sir.'"

Tuberville spoke to the media outside of the courthouse on Monday, attacking the district attorney and witnesses, and went so far as to question whether the jury was truly American.

"Hopefully, we have more and more senators and congressmen go up and represent him, and go out and overcome this gag order," Tuberville told to Newsmax. "That's why we went up was to go there and speak our peace for President Trump."

'Clownish': Trump allies mocked for donning matching suits for court

They were dressing to impress an audience of one. Republicans flocked to a Lower Manhattan courthouse Tuesday as a show of solidarity with former President Donald Trump as he attends his criminal hush money trial, now in its fourth week.

North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Florida Rep. Byron Donalds, former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, and Florida Rep. Cory Mills held a presser outside 100 Centre Street — all sporting dark blue suits, white collared shirts and red ties in a styled effort to pay their respects to the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee.

Isaiah Swift noticed the Trumpian uniform, writing: "All wearing the same tie. Interesting." "Another edition of ‘Who wants to be VP’ reaches an excruciating climax," read an X post by Jezzytgl.

@asphyxious2 was blunt about the obvious fashion statement, tweeting: "Is that the ‘stand in court with the criminal leader of our party’ standard uniform they are all wearing?" On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace called the uniform "clownish." Former prosecutor Andrew Weissmann added it reminded him of mob cases.

Matching diapers would be been appropriate.

Liz Cheney drops the mic on Mike Johnson for attending Trump's hush-money trial

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) roasted her former colleague, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), for showing up to former President Donald Trump's hush-money trial in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Punchbowl News' Jake Sherman reported earlier in the morning that Johnson would become the latest politician to show up to show his support for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, and Cheney couldn't help but note the irony of a devout Christian like Johnson pledging allegiance to a man on trial for seedy hush-money coverup charges.

"Have to admit I’m surprised that Speaker Johnson wants to be in the 'I cheated on my wife with a porn star' club," wrote Cheney. "I guess he’s not that concerned with teaching morality to our young people after all."

Cheney wasn't the only prominent commentator to weigh in on Johnson's display of fealty to Trump. Yale Law School professor Scott Shapiro also cracked a joke about a pious Christian like Johnson defending Trump's adult film star hush-money payments. "I prayed and the Lord said to me: 'Modern-day Moses, go forth and support the man who paid the porn star not to reveal his adultery and then lied to the Government so as to pay less tax,'" he wrote.

DOJ urges judge to jail Bannon now after conviction appeal fails

The Justice Department is asking a federal judge to order Steve Bannon to begin his prison sentence now. According to ABC News, "Prosecutors said there is no legal basis for Judge Carl Nichols to continue the stay on Bannon serving his sentence after the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals' conclusive ruling that rejected the basis for Bannon's appeal on all grounds."

Bannon, a right-wing podcaster who previously served as a political strategist for former President Donald Trump, was convicted of contempt of Congress for repeatedly refusing to comply with subpoenas from the House committee investigating the January 6 attack.

Since his conviction in 2022, he has been fighting to have his four-month prison sentence overturned, but the appellate court rejected his argument earlier this month.

"There is no longer a 'substantial question of law that is likely to result in a reversal or an order for a new trial," prosecutors wrote in the filing.

Trump Cites Fox, Then Fox Cites Trump Citing Fox As Proof Of Innocence

During breaks with Donald Trump's criminal trial, the former President typically meets reporters off to the side to whine about how cold it is in the courtroom; then he reads snips of articles by people in his toxic right-wing media bubble. Monday was not a good day for Lumpy, so he read Fox News columns aloud as proof that he was innocent. Then, to prove that Trump is innocent, Fox News cited Trump reading Fox News columns. It's like they're a tag team. Has anyone ever seen Fox News and Trump in the same room simultaneously? They might be the same!

"You know, former President Trump stood in the hallway there saying that all of these legal experts keep saying there's no crime there," a Fox News pundit said. "And I've been going through all of the reports, all of the editorials, all of the left-leaning news sources. I can't find a legal analyst out there who's actually explaining how a crime was committed."

We try to extend ourselves to help others here at C&L. So, let's help them out. Trump was handed down a 34-count indictment charging him with falsifying business records over the hush money payment his now-former fixer, Michael Cohen, made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in order to aid him in winning the 2016 Presidential election. Presidential interference is another word for that.

"This is four weeks you're keeping me away from the campaign," Trump said during a break, even though he's been golfing and Mar-a-Lagoing on many of the days that he's free.

Speaker Johnson to appear at courthouse amid Trump hush money trial

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) will appear at the Manhattan courthouse Tuesday as former President Trump sits for another day of his hush money trial.

Johnson is the latest Republican lawmaker to visit the court amid Trump’s ongoing criminal trial, which has kept the former president largely off the campaign trail as he vies for another term in the White House. Rep. Cory Mills is also joining Trump at the courthouse on Tuesday, the Florida Republican told The Hill.

The Speaker’s trip to New York comes less than a week after the House overwhelmingly blocked an attempt by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) to oust him from office, an outcome that some have attributed, in part, to the former president’s backing of Johnson.

Trump voiced support for Johnson on a number of occasions amid the ouster threat — including during a joint appearance at Mar-a-Lago — and he posted on social media urging Republicans to vote to table Greene’s motion to vacate. That Truth Social post — which called Johnson a “good man who is trying very hard” — published minutes after the vote closed, however.

Stormy Daniels Feared For Her Life At Trump Trial - Wore Bulletproof Vest

Stormy Daniels was so concerned bullets would rain down on her at the Trump trial last week that she wore a bulletproof vest to the NYC courthouse ... this according to her attorney.

Stormy's lawyer, Clark Brewster, sat down with CNN Monday night to discuss the testimony his porn star client gave from the witness stand at the Trump hush money trial in Manhattan. During the interview, Brewster revealed Stormy had "a lot of fear" about "the security coming into New York."

As a result, Clark claimed Stormy "wore a bulletproof vest every day" to the criminal courthouse in lower Manhattan. Clark said before Stormy even arrived in the Big Apple on Sunday "she cried herself to sleep and "was paralyzed with fear." He noted that she was not nervous about taking the stand and telling her story," but "what might some nut might do to her."

As you know, Stormy testified last Tuesday and Thursday about her alleged tryst with Trump, detailing their steamy 2006 romp in a hotel room for the jury. Trump has always maintained the sexual encounter never occurred.

Judging From Trump's Reaction, Michael Cohen's Testimony Is Crushing

Trump ended up quoting Sen. J.D. Vance about how his trial is a threat to democracy, “They view this as a scam. I think it’s a terrible thing that’s happening to democracy in this country. And uh we have a lot of them that want to come and say, just stay back and pass lots of laws to stop things like this. Uh JD Vance, what’s going on in that courtroom is a threat to democracy and we cannot have a country where we get to prosecute your political opponent instead of persuading voters.”

A man who tried to end democracy by stealing an election is claiming that democracy is in peril because he is being held accountable for alleged crimes. The ex-president went on and on reading quotes from stack of papers as if he was trying to convince himself that the American people are behind him.

Trump seems to know that he is not winning the trial. At some level, he also appears to understand that Michael Cohen’s testimony is very bad for him. Outside the courthouse, Trump was in panic mode, spending minutes throwing everything at the wall and hoping that something stuck.

Donald Trump knows that there is a sizable percentage of voters who say that they will not vote for him if the former president is convicted of a felony. Trump is trying to discredit the process in the hope of discrediting a conviction. Michael Cohen’s testimony was bad for Trump, but what even worse was the show was put on outside of the courtroom.

'Time for Donald to testify': Michael Cohen's ex-lawyer taunts Trump over hush money trial promise

Michael Cohen's former attorney Lanny Davis dared former President Donald Trump Monday night to make good on a pledge to testify in his historic criminal hush money trial.

"Michael Cohen did his time and they found that he was directed by Mr. Trump," Davis said while appearing on CNN. "So if Michael Cohen did the time for the crime, so should Mr. Trump."

That's when Davis called on Trump to face the truth-firing squad and testify in court. "I have an invitation for all of Mr. Trump's supporters tonight and to Mr. Trump respectfully — you said to your supporters, to the American people, that you would testify, not 'might' but 'would' testify.

"Now, Michael Cohen has been carpeted with the attacks at being a liar, when he was lying almost always for you. So now you're going to keep your word, Mr. Trump and testify. Stand up and tell the truth the way that Michael Cohen has and then we'll see what the jury decides."
