(23,314 posts)And Im sensitive to it....especially as a woman. That said, with physical beauty comes power....theres no denying it. Long term staying power is dependent on so much more than good looks. AOC is physically beautiful AND she has the goods in terms of smarts, courage and conviction that will carry her through.
Rebl2
(13,506 posts)but it wasnt necessary to say that. Sorry but I dont believe that with beauty comes power. There are many people who are beautiful that have little or no power and many not so great looking people who have far to much power.
Glamrock
(11,800 posts)You now bear the same guilt you're trying to saddle me with. Acknowledging another's beauty doesn't mean that's the only thing you see in them. It'd only acknowledging what'd on the outside. I said she was far more than her looks. I purposefully put her intelligence and strength of character in front of her physical attributes. Why? Because those are far more important attributes. I can't tell you how to feel, but I'll tell you this.
I consider myself a feminist. My wife is my equal. My partner in life. Until men can carry a child to term, they have no business even speaking about a womans reproductive rights. If a woman does the same job as me she should be payed the same. Fucking period. No means no, regardless of the timeframe that no comes into play.
Those are strongly held beliefs I hold. I am your ally. If you are offended because I verbalized the fact thay she is physically attractive along with her other attributes? Hey baby, that's on you. (And before you attack me for that, I call my male friends baby too. Don't even try. Spend 2 minutes in MA and you'll ser that's true.) I refuse to apologize for seeing this young woman for what she is. If all you can see is me calling her a piece of meat, well than I gotta tell ya, you're seeing what you choose to see. And you can tell by the replies you've received you're probably wrong in that assertation..
If I seem pissed to you, yeah, I kinda am. I am your ally. I am on the frontlines and have been for decades in my blue collar world, defending womem's right to choose, women's right to fair pay. Getting in dude's shit when they catcall. To be called mysogenist for stating something that's plainly obvious to anyone is insulting.
Perhaps, and I'm just spitballing here, the more militant feminists among us should spend more time attacking those who consider women to be second class citizens than those on their side for slights they've pulled out of thin air. Regardless of the nasty reply I'm sure to get, I will continue to be the dude thay tries to school the real mysogenists in our society. The dude that votes with womens rights in mind. The dude who will drop everything and fucking throw down if he sees another man abusing a woman. Bit hey, I called a beautiful woman a beautiful woman. Shame on me.

(7,220 posts)It's one of those things that aren't PC to say, but beauty can open doors. One can't get away with simply being beautiful (think Ivanka and most Kardashians) without having intelligence, kindness, empathy and many other things to be truly successful in life, a person who can lead and/or whom others aspire to be like.
Of course, there are plenty of men and women who are not strikingly attractive who manage to be successful. Beauty is not required, but it can help get attention, which is what seems to be happening with AOC. Fortunately she's got substance and the combination is what's getting her more attention than perhaps some of her peers.
Finally, although physical attractiveness can be a door-opener, it's also a double-edged sword. Personally I've had people pay attention to me because they were physically attracted, and then a bit surprised at my intelligence, particularly in the workplace (I work in tech/healthcare). I've overheard people (men and women) suggest I got promotions or power because of attractiveness, which is disheartening, but I know my record speaks for itself and I ignore those people, mostly. These days I work from home and don't have to deal with unwanted attention and/or anyone's opinion as to whether the inside matches the outside.
AOC isn't afforded that luxury, and the other weird stigma about being pretty is you're not allowed to complain about unwanted attention.

The woman has the ability to go places. I sincerely hope she does. She is new yet. We shall see.

(53,410 posts)She is a beautiful woman.
There was a time when beautiful women were considered stupid airheads! Or gold diggers, or just to be used as adornment on some mans arm. Or as something for men to grab at.
People would admire and like her even if she wasnt beautiful!

I often disagree with her and think she is sometimes misguided, but I just love having confident, strong women in our caucus. It makes us stronger and represents the future.
I especially love Senator Sinema from Arizona. Those stiff neck misogynist dont have a clue how to deal with her.

(3,022 posts)that the boys in the picture are being falsely described? All I was doing was explaining how the joke in the meme worked to GulfCoast66 as they didn't seem to understand who's father was being discussed. For the purpose of the meme they appear to be privileged young fellows struck by the beauty and confidence of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez. Of course the truth of any or all of the boys circumstances is not ascertainable from a photograph.
